A very quick knit, the straightforward construction of this hat makes it a nice introduction to knitting with circular and double-pointed needles. Use contrasting or complementary colors to add stripes and it becomes a perfect stash-buster for those odds and ends of yarn.

Materials

Size 5 16inch circular needle for body of hat Size 5 double pointed needles (dpn)(for decrease rows) Preemie size is knit with dpn needles Knit Picks Shine Sport, Bernat Baby Jacquard, Debbi Bliss Baby Cashmerino 1 skein Stitch marker

Size

This hat is designed for preemie (11" circumference), newborn (13" circumference) and baby (14" circumference). The stockinette construction gives it flexible negative ease. Make a larger version using worsted weight yarn and size 7 needles.

Gauge

14 stitches = 2" 10rowS=2" Adjust needle size as necessary to obtain gauge or wear the hat floppier!

Abbreviations

CO- Cast onK-Knit PM- Place marker dpn- double pointed needles K2tog- knit 2 together \* \* repeat direction inside until end of round

Hat Construction

Cast-on (C0) 56( 64, 72) with larger needles using a long tail cast-on method. Row 1 PM. Join to knit in the round being careful not to twist yarn. Knit in stockinette stitch (knitting all rounds) until the hat measures 3(4, 5) inches from cast-on stitches. (For a deeper rolled brim add to length)

Shape Top

Switch to double-pointed needles for decrease rows PM. Row 1 \*K6, K2tog\* \*continue pattern until end of round. Row 2 Knit round Row 3 \*K5, K2tog\* \*continue pattern until end of round. Row 4 Knit round Row 5 \*K4, K2tog\* \*continue pattern until end of round. Row 6 Knit round Row 7 \*K3, K2tog\* \*continue pattern until end of round. Row 8 Knit round Row 9 \*K2, K2tog\* \*continue pattern until end of round. Row 10 \*K1, K2tog\* \*continue pattern until end of round. Row 11 \*K2tog\* \*continue pattern until end of round. ) Decrease using k2 together until 6 stitches remain.

Embellishments

I-CordConstruction With 6 remaining stitches, knit 1 row then slide all stitches to the opposite end of the needle. Pulling the yarn from the back, knit all the stitches and slide the completed knitting to opposite end of the needle. Continue knitting and sliding until the I-cord measures.. Simply Simone-7.5 (8, 8) inches. -bow topknot cord Simple Simon- 4.5 (5, 5) inches -knotted cord Then, cut 1 foot length of yarn. Using a tapestry needle, thread yarn through the Icord stitches on the needle and pull taut. Use yarn and needle to pull the I-cord through the top of the hat. Check to be sure that the top of the I-cord is embedded in hat top, then securely stitch in ends. Simple Simon- Weave in ends, cut yarn. Simply Simone- Find the center point of the I-Cord, stitch the bow by coming up through the center point with the tapestry needle. Wrap yarn until the bow is secure, weave in ends, cut yarn. Weave in cast-on yarn. Leaf - Use Hinke's Just a Leaf pattern on Ravelry to construct one or two leaves.
