Lotus Mittens By Wendy Woodhead These mittens were designed and knit for my friend Mel. Our birthdays both fall late in the year and as we hate getting one gift for birthdays and Christmas we decided to make a fake birthday in August. She is making me a sheep hanging quilt and I am doing these mittens and a few other things. They can be made into fingerless mitts if you'd like. Simply knit 2 rounds plain after the last repeat of the chart and then knit 2 rounds k1tbl, p1 around and bind off. With the thumb: after stitches are picked up, knit 5 rounds plain, k1tbl, p1 for 2 rounds and bind off. They are also knit for women’s size medium. If you'd like them bigger or smaller simply use needles one size bigger or smaller.
You will need:
US 4 (3.5 mm) knitting needles (DPNS, magic loop or 2 circi 2 stitch markers tapestry needle for kitchener stitch and weaving in ends Yarn used: Indigodragonfly MCN Sport (merino/cashmere/nylon blend - 250 yards per skein), roughly half a skein Colour: Don't you have an elsewhere to be (Cordelia) 12sts and 14 rows per 4 inches

CO 36 sts. Join in the round without twisting. Work 15 rounds k1tbl, p1 around

Increase 6 sts evenly around (every 6 sts or so)for a total of 42 sts. I like using RLinc and LLinc as they don't leave holes (Cat Bhourdi explains how on her YouTube video), but use which ever method you like (ie. Kfb, m1L, m1R, etc.).
Mitten Body
Work round 1 of chart for first 21 sts. On the remaining 21 sts: For right mitten: k1, place marker, k2, place marker, k to the end of round, For left mitten: k18, place marker, k2, place marker, k1. The sts between the markers will be the thumb gusset sts. On rounds 2, 5, 8 (on chart repeat 1) and 3, 5 and 6 (on chart repeat 2) you will increase (using whichever method you prefer) 1 st directly after the first marker and directly before the second marker, for a total of 14 sts, which will be placed on a spare holder or thread for knitting after the body is complete. Work round 2 of chart and knit the remaining sts, increasing for the thumb when necessary until round 7 of second repeat of chart. On round 7, work chart for 21 sts and on remaining sts: For right mitten, k15 sts, place thumb sts (14 sts) on holder and k remaining sts. For left mitten: k to last st, place thumb sts (14 sts) on holder, k1. Round 8, work chart. K sts until you have reached where the sts for the thumb were, C) 2 sts, k to the end of round (42 sts again). Work 2 more chart repeats, for a total of 4 chart repeats.
