Abbreviations:
ch - chain chs- chains sl st - slip stitch sC - single crochet hdc - half double crochet sc2tog- single crochet two together st - stitch sts - stitches rnd - round rnds - rounds beg - beginning
Materials:
Approximately 109-115 yards size 5, bulky yarn (3.5oz./100g (109 yd/100m) I prefer Michael's Brand Loops & Threads Charisma, you may need slightly more than 1 skein (results may vary depending onyarn used) M-13 9mm Crochet Hook TapestryNeedle
Gauge in Rows:
6 rows & 8hdc = 4"x4" with M-13 9mm crochet hook Please be sure to check your gauge before starting, as tension can vary greatly from person to person and depending on the yarn used. I tend to crochet pretty loosely. Adjust hook size up or down in order to obtain proper gauge.
Size:
Hat is one size fits most, made to fit an average woman's size head approximately 21-23 inches. Adjust hook size up or down to adjust hat size slightly smaller or larger than the average size given of 21-23 inches. You can also add or subtract increase rounds if you are unable to get the proper size you are looking for. This will change the stitch count throughout. To make the hat extra slouchy add extra rounds before starting the decrease round for the brim. SpecialNotes: Each rnd (not including rnd 1), starts with a ch 1, which does not count as the first st of the rnd. When joining each rnd you should sl st to the top of the first counted st, not the initial ch 1 space. Rnd 1. Ch 3 (counts as first hdc), 9 hdc in 3rd ch from hook, join with sl st to top of ch 3. (10hdc) Alternatively, you may use the magic circle method as follows: Create a magic circle, ch 2 (counts as first hdc) 9 hdc in circle, join with sl st to top of ch 2. (10 hdc) is ch 1, 2hdc in the next st, and remaining sts, join with sl st to top of beg hdc. (20 hdc Rnd 3. Ch 1, hdc in same stas ch 1, 2 hdc in next st,\*hdc in the next st, 2 hdc in next st\*, repeat from \* to \* around, join with sl st to top of beg hdc. (30 hdc) (diameter should measure approximately 5.5 inches across at this point) Rnd 4. Ch 1, hdc in same st as ch 1, hdc in next st, 2hdc in next st, \*hdc in the next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st\*, repeat from \* to \* around, join with sI st to top of beg hdc. 40 hdc) Rnd 5. Ch 1, hdc in same st as ch 1, hdc in next 2 sts, 2hdc in next st, \*hdc in the next 3 sts, 2hdc in next st\*,repeat from \* to \* around, join with sI st to top of beg hdc. (50 hdc) Rnd 6. Ch 1, hdc in same st as ch 1, hdc in remaining sts, join with sl st to top of beg hdc. (50 hdc) Rnd 7-11. Repeat rnd 6 Rnd 12. Ch1, sc in same st as ch 1, sc in next st, \*sc2tog in next st, sc in next st\*, repeat from \* to \* around, join with sl st to beg sc. (34 sc) The sts in the next 6 rnds should be worked loosely, or the band may turn out too tight. Check the size often, and switch to a larger hook if needed. It should have enough room to turn up the brim and wear it as a beanie. Rnd 13. Ch1, sc in same st as ch1, sc in remaining sts, join with sl st to beg sc. (34 s( Rnds 14-18. Repeat rnd 13 Your new hat is now complete, please enjoy!
