pattern:
cuff: loosely cast on 64 sts. join for working in the round. place a marker for beginning of the round. work 12 rounds of the cuff pattern as charted below (the first 10 rounds are simple [p2, k2] ribbing) cuff chart:

[ repeat times/round set-up for leg: remove marker, knit 1 stitch and place marker. this is the new beginning of the round. work the 6 rounds of the setup chart. setup chart:

now you have 80 sts on your needles. leg: work rounds 1-32 of leg pattern (see chart below). then work rounds 1-25 again. note: in round 10 and 29 the beginning of the round shifts by 2 sts. to achieve this, in round 9 you work sts 1 to 78 only, in round 28 you knit the first 2 sts, continue to the end of the charted line, then start the line again (for second half of the round), this time omitting the first 2 stitches. remove and replace marker accordingly to mark new beginning of round leg chart:

# heel flap:
remove marker and work linel of heel chart once and turn work. the heel is worked back and forth over this 32 sts just set up. place remaining 40 sts on an empty needle, they will be worked later for instep. continue to work heel from line 2 to line 11 of heel chart, then repeat lines 10 and 11 seven times more (you then have worked 25 rows on the heel flap all together). heel chart turn heel:

WS: sl1 wyf, p18, p2tog, k1, turn RS: sl1 wyf, k7, k2tog, k1, turn WS: sl1 wyf, purl to 1 stitch before gap, p2tog, kl, turn RS: sl1 wyf, knit to 1 stitch before gap, k2tog, k1, turn repeat theses last 2 rows until all sts have been worked, don't turn after the last RS row. 20 heel sts remain.
gusset:
pick up and knit 13 sts along side of heel flap, pick up and knit one more stitch between flap and instep. continue by working the 40 held instep sts in instep pattern (line 1 of instep chart below) then pick up and knit 1 stitch between instep and heel flap, pick up and knit 13 more sts along side of heel flap. knit 10 of the remaining heel sts and place marker for new beginning of the round. now you have 48 sole sts and 40 instep sts. gusset decrease: round 1: k to 1 st before instep, k2tog the first instep st with the last sole st, then work instep sts 2 - 31 in instep pattern as charted ssk the last instep st with the first st of the sole, then k to end of row. round 2: k all sole sts, continue instep in pattern as charted, then knit sole sts to end of round. work these 2 rounds 8 times ( $\mathit{\Theta}=16$ rounds total), decreasing by 2 sts every other round. now you have 32 sole sts and 40 instep sts.

foot: continue instep in pattern as charted, while always plain knitting all sole sts. work until foot is about 2.25 - 2.5 inches shorter than desired length. end with the last stitch of the sole after having worked one of the following instep lines: 2, 16, or 24. set-up for toe: only if you ended after row 2 only if you ended after rows 16 or 24

if you worked the setup rows as described above, you now have 64 sts left on your needles. foot should be about 2 inches shorter than desired length now. if your foot is not long enough yet, work a few rounds like this, until it's long enough: work sts of instep as they appear, i.e. k the knits, p the purls, while always plain knitting all sole sts. then continue as follows: toe: row 1 (plain round): knit all sts row 2 (decrease round): instep: kl, ssk, k to 3 sts before end of instep, k2tog, k1. sole: kl, ssk, k to 3 sts before end of sole, k2tog, k1. repeat this 2 rows until there are 36 sts left, then always work row2 until there are 16 sts left. (this results in a pointy toe. if you like a more rounded one, proceed as follows: row1, row2, 3x rowl, row2, 2x rowl, row2, 2x row1, [row2, row1]4x, 5x row2.)
finishing:
leaving a tail of at least 8 inches, cut yarn and close the toe using Kitchener stitch. weave in all ends, knit a second sock and enjoy!
about this pattern:
Tamino is the handsome prince in ‘The Magic Flute', opera by Wolfgang A. Mozart, who has to undergo many trials and pass ordeals to win the girl he loves. the meandering ways he has to go towards wisdom and final triumph are reflected in the serpentine cables of the pattern. the pattern was inspired by Elsebeth Lavold's book Viking Patterns for Knitting", where you can find many more great stitch patterns to play with in your own designs.
