On being asked, after spotting some lovely winey-coloured Dk in a shop at home, to make her some socks for Christmas, I immediately thought of this charming herringbone-like pattern: a pattern which reminds me of the bookmarks I used to have when I was little! That, plus a Dutch heel (because I'm in Holland) and a star toe (because she's a star sister) completes my book-inspired, secretary-dedicatedsock! Needles: Set of 5 dpns size 3.25mm (US 3.) Yarn: DK - any kind. Try this with a variegated or striping yarn, and see the opposing patterns present themselves! Other Notions: Stitch marker Gauge: approx 16 sts/18 rounds = 2 inches (st st) Size: Medium. (Ankle 8"/9") For larger or smaller sizes, I'd recommend going up or down a needle size. Notes: The difference between the cuff stitch pattern and the pattern main is only 1 p1 stitch at the end of the repeat, but I've written them

If you're planning on doing ankle or short socks, begin immediately with the Bookmark MAIN stitch pattern by casting on 60 sts only.) Cast-on 64 stitches onto 1 dpn then spread them evenly over 4 dpns making sure that each 'half' is 32 sts. Join in round, being careful not to twist the stitches, PM to indicate the beginning of the round and begin the Bookmark CUFF Stitch pattern. Work for 112 to 2 inches. Leg: For the first repeat work the preparatory round for the MAIN stitch pattern instead of the 1st round. This takes the st count down from 64 to 60 sts. Continue with the MAIN stitch pattern until you are roughly 112 inches from the heel.
