note: in round 5 and 11 the beginning of the round shifts by 1 st. to achieve this, in round 4 you end the round after st 79, and in round 10 you ktbl the first st, continue to the end of the charted line, then start the line again (for second half of the round), this time omitting the first charted st. setup for heel flap: work each of the lines 1-3 of heel setup chart once and turn work after each line. ATTENTION: there are special meanings for the chart keys on the WS rows, consult chart key! heel setup chart:

the heel is worked back and forth over this 31 sts just set up. place remaining 40 sts on an empty needle, they will be worked later for instep. heel: then work line $_{1+2}$ of heel chart 15 times (30 rows all together), turning work after each line. heel chart:

turn heel: WS: sll yf, p17, p2tog, k1, turn RS: sl1 yf, k6, k2togtbl, k1, turn WS: sl1 yf, purl to 1 stitch before gap, p2tog, k1, turn RS: sll yf, knit to 1 stitch before gap, k2tog, k1, turn repeat theses last 2 rows until all sts have been worked, don't turn after the last RS row. 19 heel sts remain.

gusset: more

pick up and knit 16 sts along side of heel flap, place marker, pick up and knit one stitch between flap and instep. then work the 40 held instep sts as follows: then pick up and knit 1 stitch between instep and heel flap, place second marker , pick up and knit 16 more sts along side of heel flap. the sts between the markers on top of the foot are the instep sts, the rest of the sts form the sole. you now have 51 sole sts and 39 instep sts. gusset decrease: round 1 (decrease round): k to 1 st before instep, k2togtw the first instep st with the last sole st, (remove marker between the 2 sts before k2togtw). then work instep from st number 2 to one st before sole in instep pattern as charted below. k2togtb1 the last instep st with the first sole st (remove marker between the 2 sts) round 2 (plain round): k all sole sts, while continuing to work all instep sts in pattern as established work these 2 rounds 10 times ( $\mathbf{\omega}^{=}~20\mathbf{\omega}$ rounds total), decreasing by 2 sts every other round. note: instep row 7 and 11 would be decrease rounds. here the edge sts of the instep are cross sts. just work these rounds as plain rounds and decrease in the next round (8 and 12) instead. you now have 31 sole sts and 42 instep sts. instep chart:

foot:

continue instep in pattern as charted, while always plain knitting all sole sts. work until foot is approx 3 - 2.25 inches shorter than desired length. end with the last stitch of the sole just before starting instep row 16. set-up fortoe: work the 3 toe setup lines charted below for instep, while always knitting all sole sts. toe setup chart:

Pattern illustration

if you worked the setup lines as described above, you have 62 sts left on your needles. the foot of the sock should be approx. 2 inches shorter than desired length now. if it's not long enough yet, just work some rows as follows, until it's long enough: work instep sts as they appear (ktbl the ktbls, p the purls), while plain knitting all sole sts. then start the toe:

toe:

row 1 (plain round): instep: work all sts as they appear (ktbl the ktbls, p the purls) sole: knit all sts row 2 (decrease round): instep: ktbl, k2togtbl, work sts as they appear to 3 sts before end of instep, k2togtw, ktbl. sole: k1, ssk, k to 3 sts before end of sole, k2tog, k1. repeat this 2 rows until there are 34 sts left, then always work row 2 until there are 14 sts left. (this results in a pointy toe. if you like a more rounded one, proceed as follows: row1,row2,3xrow1,row2, $\mathbf{\Psi}_{2x}$ row1,row2, $\mathbf{\Psi}_{2x}$ row1,[row2,row1]3x, 6x row2.)

finishing:

leaving a tail of at least 8 inches, cut yarn and close the toe using Kitchener stitch. weave in all ends, knit a second sock and enjoy!

about this pattern:

in ‘The Magic Flute', opera by Wolfgang A. Mozart, this story about good and evil, Sarastro, the high priest of an enlightened brotherhood, abducts Pamina, whose mother is the evil Queen of the Night. to save her daughter, the Queen sends Prince Tamino, who immediately falls in love with Pamina. predictably, love and goodness triumph, Sarastro overcomes the Queen of the Night, Tamino and Pamina are united after many twists and turns. the meandering ways towards final triumph are reflected in the serpentine cables of the pattern. this pattern is the more delicate, feminine version of the “Tamino" sock pattern. both were inspired by Elsebeth Lavold's book “Viking Patterns for Knitting", where you can find many more great stitch patterns to play with in your own designs.
