Yarn: Two contrasting colors of fngering-weight yarn that gives you proper gauge. You'll need approx 50 (70, 90) grams of the Main Color and 30 (35, 40) grams of a Contrasting Color. Sample shown is knit with Shalimar Yarns Zoe Sock (100% SUPERWASH Merino wool; 450 yd per 4 oz skein), color: cayenne; 1 skein and Dream in Color Smooshy (100% SUPERWASH Merino wool; 450yd per 4oz skein), color: purple rain; 1 skein. Notions: Cable needle, Tapestry needle, and (optional) a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of the round. NOTES: This advanced sock pattern is worked from the cuff down with two colors. It includes a sideways cabled cuff, mosaic knitting, a heel flap, and a grafted toe. The slipped stitches create a fabric that is slightly less stretchy than standard stockinette stitch. Keep this in mind when choosing yarn and sock size. The Ides of March was once a festive day dedicated to the Roman god Mars. In modern times, the term Ides of March is best known as the date that Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 B.C. This sock design was inspired by ancient Roman tile. Just go ahead and jump in - there is nothing to beware of here! The small and large sizes have an odd number of chart repeats, so you may find it easier to split the stitches onto your needles after 4 repeats. Just be sure to adjust your stitches before working the heel flap as instructed.

What is mosaic knitting? Describing mosaic knitting is harder than actually doing it. Barbara Walker named the process of slipping stitches while alternating rows of color “mosaic knitting" because it naturally lends itself to geometric design. Unlike stranded knitting, you only work with one color at a time. You will slip stitches to give the illusion of colorwork. In this pattern, you will work 2 rows of one color across the round, slipping the stitches that are indicated as the second color, then work 2 rows of the other color, slipping the stitches that as charted. In the charts, the MC is represented with white and the CC is shaded.

With MC, CO 27 sts using a provisional CO, leaving a 12” tail. Sample sock was constructed using a crochet chain method\*. Work rows 1-8 of the Caesar Cuff pattern 14 (16, 18) times for a total of 112 (128, 144) rows. There will be 14 (16, 18) cable rows along your cuff. \*See a video demonstration of the crochet chain method here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okuYEOQhtOk

RS: Odd numbered rows. WS: Even numbered rows Pick up the 12" tail from your CO and graft sts together with provisional CO row using kitchener stitch. The first st of the first row was a slipped st. Be sure to graft that st (or alternatively the purl st from row 2, if you find that more comfortable). With RS facing, pick up and PURL 56 (64, 72) sts along slipped-stitch edge of cuff. This will create an edge along the bottom of the cuff where it meets the leg of the sock. Divide evenly between needles and join to begin working in the round.

et up rnd: (MC) Knit 42 (48, 54) sts. This is now the beginning of the round. All Sizes: Join CC and work rnds 1-16 of Caesar St Pattern four times (64 rnds). These socks are both really simple and really unusual. The prank here is that a simple pair of socks emerge in the strangest fashion. Because the pair is knit all at once, there will be no second sock syndrome... And if you can't bear cutting the socks open, you can always wear your creationasacowl!
Foot circumference:
7 (8, 9, 10) inches 17.5 (20, 23, 25.5 cm) unstretched. Will stretch to fit 8 (9, 10, 11) inches 20 (23, 25.5, 28 cm). Yarn: Any Fingering, Sport or DK weight yarn that gives you proper gauge. Sample shown: Claudia Hand Painted Yarns Sport [100% Merino; 225yd/206m per 100g/ 3.53oz skein]; color: Summer Rose; 1 skein. Yardage Requirement Chart: (approx.)

Waste yarn in the same thickness in a contrasting color, 4 yards. Gauge: This pattern is written for four different gauges:
Yarn Weight | Needle Size | Sts per inch |
Fingering | US 0 (2 mm) | 9 |
Fingering | US 1 (2.25 mm) | 8 |
Sport | US 2 (2.75 mm) | 7 |
DK | US 3(3.25mm) | 6 |

Needles: 1 set of 32" circular needles (magic loop) OR 2 sets of 24” circulars (two circulars) OR double pointed needles. Notions: Tapestry needle, scissors, and (optional) a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of the round. Sizes: This pattern is written for four sizes: (See foot circumference to determine best size) Women's Small (Women's Medium/Men's Small, Women's Large/Men's Medium, Men's Large) NOTES: This intermediate sock pattern is worked from the toe up. The technique is unusual, but it is not too hard. The toe is worked, then the short-row heel, the leg, the cuff, a few rounds of waste yarn are worked, then another cuff, leg, heel and toe. This produces a two-ended sock which will be cut open at the section with the waste yarn. Live stitches are picked up and bound off. This technique produces a pair of socks knit as one piece If you are a confident knitter with much sock making experience, you may substitute a gusseted heel with heel flap for the shortrow heel if you prefer. If you are that sort of knitter, you probably already knew that! Foot Chart: Find gauge and foot circumference. The number in the box is the circumference number. If you are in between two numbers, pick the smaller number. Foot Circumference

Total: 40 (48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 68,72, 80, 88) sts.

Start Sock:
Toe:
Using a toe-up cast-on method of your choice\* (Turkish, Figure-8, or Provisional, e.g.) cast on a total of 12 (16,16,16,20,20,20,24,24,24) stitches-6 (8,8,8,10, 10,10,12,12,12) on each needle. Knit across the stitches on each needle once. Rnd 1: [K 1, M1, knit until the last stitch, M1, K1] twice. Repeat these 2 rounds until you have your desired foot circumference number (see Foot Circumference Chart): 40 (48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 68, 72, 80, 88) sts. Half of your sts are on N1 (sole) and the second half are on N2 (instep). \*I used Judy's Magic Cast On found here: http://www.knitty.com/IsSSUEspring06/ FEATmagiccaston.html
Foot:
Knit all sts. Work until sock reaches ankle bone. --> (Approx. 1.5 inches to back of heel)

Short-Row Heel:
Heel is worked back and forth over 20 (24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 40, 44) sts on N1. Leave the remaining top of foot (instep) sts on N2. Row 1: (RS) K until last 2 sts, w&t. Row 2: (WS) P until last 2 sts, w&t. Row 3: K until st just before last wrapped st, w&t. Row 4: P until st just before last wrapped st, w&t. Rep rows 3 & 4 until 8 (8, 10, 10, 12, 12, 12, 14, 14, 16) sts remain unwrapped in the center of heel. The heel is half finished.
Heel Turn:
Rw 1: (RS) K to first wrapped st. Lift wrap over needle and knit wrap and st tog as one. W&t. Rw 2: (wS) P to frst wrapped st. Lift wrap over needle and purl wrap and st tog as one. W&t. Rw 3: K to next wrapped st. Lift both wraps over needle and knit wraps and st tog as one. W&t. Rw 4: P to next wrapped st. Lift both wraps over needle and purl wraps and st tog as one. W&t. Rep rows 3 & 4 until two sts remain on each side of center. Next row: K to next wrapped st. Lift both wraps over needle and knit wraps and st together as one.W&t. Next row: P to next wrapped st. Lift both wraps over needle and purl wraps and st together as one.W&t. Next rnd: K to last st. Lift wrap over needle and knit wrap and st together as one. Do not turn. Knit across instep. Next rnd: Knit next st together with wrap. Knit across all sts. 40 (48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 68, 72, 80,88) sts.

Leg: Next rnd: Knit all sts. Leg will be worked in the round over all sts. Cont. until leg measures 6" or until your desired leg length. Be sure to stop before half of your yarn is used.
Cuff:
Next rnd: [K2, p2] across all sts. Work this rnd for 1.5". Break yarn, leaving a 2-yard tail. Steek Section: Join waste yarn and knit 5 rounds. Break yarn.
Second Cuff:
Join working yarn, leaving a 2-yard tail. Next rnd: [K2, p2] across all sts. Work this rnd for 1.5". Next rnd: Knit all sts. Cont. until leg measures 6" or the same as your first leg.

Second Leg:
Second Short-Row heel:
Remove marker. Knit across half of your sts. and place marker. This is the new beginning of rnd. Heel is worked as before, but now across N2. Work short-row heel and turn as instructed above.
Foot:
Knit across all sts. Work until second foot is the same length as the first foot, ready to start toe decreases at the same point the toe increases stopped on the first foot.
Toe:
Round 1: [K1, ssk, work to last 3 sts on N, k2tog, k1] twice. Rep these 2 rnds until a total of 12 (16, 16, 16, 20, 20, 20, 24, 24, 24) stitches remain -6 (8, 8, 8, 10, 10, 10, 12, 12, 12) on each needle. Break yarn, leaving long enough tail to graft toe using Kitchener stitch. Graft remaining stitches together.
Steeking:
Using scissors, carefully cut across the center of one st worked in waste yarn to open up sock tube. Gently continue to cut open sock, along the center of waste yarn sts until entire sock is cut open. Do not cut through both layers of the sock at once. Instead, cut around one layer of the knitted fabric.

Pick up first sock and set second sock aside for now. Gently unpick waste yarn and replace live sts onto needles. Pick up long tail of original working yarn and BO all sts either using a sewn bind-off or some other stretchy bind off of your choice\*. Repeat for second sock. \*I used Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off found here: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEfallO9/FEATjssbo.php
Finishing:
Weave in ends. Block as desired. April Fool's Day is observed everywhere. No one really knows where or when it started. My favorite pranks involve trying to get people to believe ridiculous things. One such gag was orchestrated by the BBC in 1957 regarding a bumper crop of spaghetti trees. Check out the full story here: http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=27ugSKW4-QQ

Anna Jarvis Socks

Size: Women's Small, Large Foot circumference: 7 (9) inches 17.5 (23 cm) unstretched. Will stretch to fit 9 (11) inches 23 (28 cm). Needles: 1 set US #1/2.25mm 32"circular needles (magic loop), 2 sets of 24" circulars or double pointed needles, or size to get gauge. Gauge: 32 sts/48 rows = 4" in Stockinette St. Yarn: Any fingering-weight yarn that gives you proper gauge. Sample shown: Crystal Palace Yarns Panda Silk [52% Bamboo, 43% Superwash merino wool, 5% combed silk; 204yd per 50gr ball]; color: 3020: 2 balls. Notions: Cable needle, tapestry needle. Instead of buying your mom flowers this year, why not knit her some instead? This project is dedicated to the founder of Mother's Day in America. The Anna Jarvis Socks resemble a basket of flowers but last a lot longer. These are socks you can't buy at a big box store. By making things by hand, we are able to live richer, more thoughtful lives. NOTES: This advanced sock is knit from the cuff-down using charts. One way to alter the size of this sock will be to change gauge: For an 8" circumference sock, work the Small at 7 sts per inch or the Large at 9 sts per inch. How to work Cable Chart without a cable needle: Sl 4 sts to right needle. Insert the tip of the left needle into the first two stitches slipped. Pull the right needle free of all stitches and pick up the loose stitches from the back. Put stitches back on the left needle and knit each stitch.

Start Sock:
Cuff: CO 60 (76) sts and join to begin working in the round, being careful not to twist your stitches. Rnd 1: [Work row 1 of Cable Chart once, then (k1tbl, p1) 12 (16) times] twice. Rnds 2-10: [Work next row of Cable Chart once, then (k1tbl, p1) 12 (16) times] twice. Leq: Note when working bobbles: (See Leg Chart) On the last round of P5, purl loosely to accommodate for the k5tog on the next row. Rnds 1-48: [Cont. Cable Chart as established, Work rnds 1-48 of Leg Chart] twice. Rnd 49: Knit all sts. Rnds 50 - 54: Purl all sts. Rnd 55: Knit all sts.
Heel:
Heel flap is worked flat, back and forth over 30 (38) sts. Rearrange sts as follows before working heel flap: Knit 3 sts and slide them to the end of N2. Slide the first 3 sts from N2 to the end of N1. The heel sts are now all on N1. Leave the remaining instep sts on N2 for now. You will not use them while working the heel flap. The heel flap chart is read back and forth, from right to left then left to right.
Heel Flap:
Small/Medium Size: Work rows 1-8 of heel chart four times. (32 rows) Large Size: Work rows 1-8 of heel chart four times. Then work rows 1-4. (36 rows)

Row 16: [WS] Sl1, P20, p2tog, turn work. Row 17: [RS] K22. Proceed to gusset.

Gusset:
Set up round: With needle 1, pick up and knit 16 (18) sts along edge of heel flap, pick up and k1 st in between heel flap and instep. With needle 2, work rnd 1 of Foot Chart, pick up and k1 st in between instep and heel flap, pick up and 16 (18) sts along other edge of heel flap. 82 (98) sts. Toe: Round 1: [K1, ssk, work to last 3 sts on N, k2tog, k1] twice. Round 2: Knit. Rep these 2 rnds until 16 (32) sts remain. 8 (16) sts on each needle. Break yarn, leaving long enough strand to graft toe using Kitchener stitch. Graft remaining stitches together.
Finishing:
Weave in ends. Block as desired.

Notions: Tapestry needle, cable needle. NOTES: Even though father's day has only been an official holiday in America since Richard Nixon made it so in 1972, there is no shortage of silly junk marketed as appropriate gifts for pop. Making your dad hand-knit socks lets him know he's worth the time, effort and yarn invested. It says you care enough about him to not get him a tie with a golf tee motif. Because of the cables, this pattern uses more yarn than a plain sock

Tour de France

Sizes (3): Small, Medium, Large Foot circumference: 7 (8, 9) inches 17.5 (20, 23 cm) unstretched. Will stretch to fit 8 (9, 10) inches 20 (23, 25.5 cm). Gauge: 32 sts/48 rows = 4" in st st Needles: 1 set US #1/2.25mm 32" circular needles (magic loop), 2 sets of 24" circulars or double pointed needles, or size to get gauge. Yarn: Fingering-weight yarn that gives you proper gauge. I'm using: Wollmeise Sockenwolle 80/20 Twin [80% Wool, 20% Nylon; 510yd per 150 gram ball]; color: Frosch: 1 skein. Notions: Tapestry needle, cable needle. NOTES: These socks have all that the Tour de France promises and more: cobblestones, winding roads, and a mountain peak inspired by the Alpe-d-Huez (The most famous climb in the world of cycling). Seed stitch suggests the famous cobbles of Paris and cables act as a twisting road winding it's way through the French countryside and up Alpe-d-Huez. It's not the longest or the steepest mountain, but it sure takes it's toll on a cyclist. It means something to make this journey, and in some ways it symbolizes the Tour de France itself. Cyclists know what it takes to survive the climb, and it bonds them in a unique way. To me, that is the heart of knitting a fine pair of socks by hand. They aren't the hardest to do, but they require time and effort. Pull on the maillot jaune and cast on now! Because of the cables, this pattern uses more yarn than a plain sock.

Start Sock:
CO 60 (68, 76) sts and join to begin working in the round, being careful not to twist your stitches.
Leq:
NOTE: The left and right sock have mirrored designs on the front of the leg which use different charts. Sock1: Rnds 1 - 40: N1: Work Back Leg Chart for appropriate size; N2: work rows 1 - 40 of Front Leg Chart. Once complete, work appropriate size instructions below. Small: Rnds 41 - 87: N1: Work rows 41 - 87 of Back Leg Chart Small; N2: work Cobble Chart Small. (Repeat cobble chart on N2 noting last row worked after completing row 87 of Back Leg Chart) Medium: Rnds 41 - 93: N1: Work rows 41 - 93 of Back Leg Chart Medium; N2: work Cobble Chart Medium. (Repeat cobble chart on N2 noting last row worked after completing row 105 of Back Leg Chart) All Sizes: Try on sock to ensure fit. Proceed to Heel instructions. For a longer leg, repeat red outlined section of Back Leg Chart across back of leg and Cobble Chart across front of leg. Sock 2: Work as instructed above, substituting Front Leg Chart 2 for the Front Leg Chart. When it is time to start on Cobble Charts, start on row 13. Work from row 13 until row 24. Sample shown: Wollmeise 100% Merino Superwash [100% Merino; 575yd per 150g skein]; color: Olio Vergine; <1 skein. NOTE: Sample socks used 88 grams/337 yards for the Women's Medium size. Sample is a medium which used 300 yards. NOTES: It was a dark and stormy night. The teapot whistled and a fire was lit. She reached into the top drawer and slipped on the coziest pair among the bunch... As the seasons change and the nights grow longer we need small comforts to protect us from the evening chill. This pair starts with the cuff, then stitches are picked up for the foot. You can even knit the foot in a contrasting yarn if you'd like. When completed, real buttons function like a cardigan sweater for addedwarmth.

Next rows: Work rows 1 - 2 of Leg Chart four times (8 rows total). BO all sts, break yarn and block to lay flat. Leg: NOTE: In this next section you are picking up stitches and knitting in the round with the larger needle. This is a perfect opportunity to introduce a new color of yarn if you'd like! Starting on the inside of the cuff at the BO edge, pick up and knit 36 (40, 44) sts evenly along inside of cuff, about 1/2 - inch up from bottom edge (See picture). Women's X-L/Men's Large) NOTES: Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a holiday to be spent gathered with family and friends to remember loved ones who have died. The celebration occurs on November 2 in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saints' Day (November 1) and All Souls' Day (November 2). Traditions connected with the holiday include building altars honoring the deceased using decorated sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed. The Day of the Dead is not a time for mourning, so knit and decorate these socks using bright, festive colors and wear them to party. These socks give the knitter options. A simple sock can be decorated by embroidering marigolds along the eyelets. A skeleton can be embroidered along the side if desired.

Embellishments:
Most of what I know about embroidery I learned just by experimenting. There are many free instructions on how to stitch on the web. My favorite resources are: http://www.sublimestitching.com/howto.html http://www.needlenthread.com/videos For this sock, thread tapestry needle with contrasting yarn or embroidery floss and start stitching! I highlighted the eyelet holes to suggest marigolds. The skeleton was worked freehand. A whip stitch was applied to the purl row just below the cuff.

In his autobiography Malcom X called Foxx "Chicago Red, the funniest dishwasher on this earth." He was one of the frst black comics to play Vegas. And when things in my own life get tough, I can hear him saying, “l'm coming Elizabeth!" which was his character's recurring statement when a situation turned stressful on Sanford and Son. This collection was made possible by the support and hard work of many people. Lorna Wilkey tested and tech edited each pattern, often with short notice and rough notes. Many, many thanks for the amazing work. Grant Law helped with the extras, photography, modeling, and brainstorming sessions. Thank you Grant. Stephannie Tallent re-built and re-wrote the Life Cycle pattern and made it knitable. Thank you so much. Life Cycle testers: Aparna (merryamethyst), Constance (cmcole), Sabine (teilzeitheldin), Melissa (pavement), Anne (AngierAnne), Aasa (Northknitter), Sarah (KnitWallflower), Lee (leeduck), Pam (KelticKnits), Noriko (norichan), Jessi (crawlingchaos), Nancy (KNITnGLO). Thank you. When the year of Sock for all Seasons was winding down my personal life changed in a big way. I appreciate the patience, kindness, love, and support of friends, family, and the wider knitting community while I worked my way through a tough time. Here is the result of those efforts. I hope you like it. Sourcebook: To learn more about the yarns used in this collection, visit the manufacturers listed below. To get in touch with me, email: starina@hotmail.com.
