approaching from the front, insert the tip of the right needle into the 2"d and 3rd stitch on the left needle. drop 3 sts off the left needle and pick up the loose stitch from the back with the left needle. transfer 2 stitches back from right needle to left needle. k2, p1. . Itw = 3 stitch left leaning twist: approaching from the back, insert the tip of the right needle into the back of the 3rd stitch on the left needle. drop 3 sts off the left needle and pick up the 2 loose stitches from the front with the left needle. transfer 1 stitch back from right needle to left needle. p1, k2. :/2 LC = 4 stitch left leaning cable: approaching from the back, insert the tip of the right needle into the back of the 3rd and 4th stitch on the left needle. drop 4 sts off the left needle and pick up the 2 loose stitches from the front with the left needle. transfer 2 stitches back from right needle to left needle. k4. 2/2 RC = 4 stitch right leaning cable: approaching from the front, insert the tip of the right needle into the 3rd and 4th stitch on the left needle as if to purl. drop 4 sts off the left needle and pick up the 2 loose stitches from the back with the left needle. transfer 2 stitches back from right needle to left needle. k4.
pattern:
before you start: if you want the socks to fit a larger foot: use a thicker yarn and knit with a larger needle size. a worsted weight yarn like Socks That Rock heavyweight or Regia 8ply will definitely give you men sized socks. make sure to have enough yarn though, because you'll need about 10% more yardage.
cuff:
loosely cast on 54 sts and join to begin working in the round. place a marker for the beginning of the round. work 9 rounds in ribbing as follows: \*[k2, p2, k2, pl, k1, p1] always repeat from \*
increase round - leg setup:
work 1 increase round as follows: \*[k2, p2, k2, pl, kl, pl, M1, k2, p2, k2, M1, pl, kl, pl, k2, p2, k2, pl, kl, pl], repeat once from \* now you have 58 sts on the needles
leg:
start working the leg chart. repeat each chart line twice to complete one round on your needles. work rounds 1-20 of leg chart twice, then work rounds 1-3 once more.

leg chart:

note: round 13 has the cables leaning the other way and not how you'd probably expect them to lean. this is done intentionally to create the effect of the cable ‘weaving through' the background fabric.
set-up for heel flap:
work the next 2 rounds as indicated in the heel setup chart. heel setup chart:

then remove the marker that indicates the beginning of the round, slip the last stitch you just worked (a purl st) from right needle back onto the left needle, thus creating a new beginning of the round. put the last 28 sts (the ones you have just worked before that purl stitch) on hold, they will be used later for instep. the heel is worked back and forth over the 26 sts you have still on the needles (starting with that purl stitch you just moved).
heel flap:
RS: sl 1 yf, [k2, p2, k2, pl, kl, pl]twice, k2, p2, k2, sl 1 yf, turn WS: kl, [sl 2 yf, k2, sl 2 yf, pl, sl 1 yf, pl] twice, sl 2 yf, k2, sl 2 yf , kl, turn work these 2 rows 14 times, i.e. 28 rows total, then work the RS row once more.

turn heel:
WS: sl 1 yf, p14, p2tog, pl, turn RS: sl 1 yb, k5, ssk, kl, turn WS: sl 1 yf, purl to 1 st before gap, p2tog, p1, turn RS: sl 1 yb, knit to 1 st before gap, ssk, kl, turn repeat the last 2 rows until all sts have been worked. don't turn after the last RS row. now 16 heel sts remain.
gusset setup:
pick up and knit 15 sts along side of heel flap, pick up one more st between flap and instep and knit it. continue by working the 28 held instep sts as listed below (see “instep rib pattern"). then pick up 1 st at the bottom of the heel flap and knit it, pick up 15 more sts along side of heel flap and knit them. knit the other 32 sole sts. this is the new beginning of the round. now you have 28 instep sts and 48 sole sts. instep rib pattern: k1, [p1, k2, p2, k2, p1, k1]three times
gusset decrease:
round 1: instep: work instep rib pattern sole: ssk, knit to 2 sts before end of sole, k2tog round 2: work instep rib pattern, then knit across all sole sts. work these 2 rounds 11 times (22 rounds all together), decreasing 2 sts every other round. now there are 28 instep sts and 26 sole sts.
foot:
continue instep in rib pattern as established while always plain knitting the sole sts. work until foot is approx. 2 inches shorter than desired length
toe setup:
work 1 round like this: instep: ssk, kl, ssk, k to 5 sts before end of instep, k2tog, k1, k2tog, sole: k1, ssk, k to 3 sts before end of sole, k2tog, k now you have 24sts each on instep and sole
toe:
rounds 1 + 2: knit around round 3: instep: k1, ssk, k to 3 sts before end of instep, k2tog, k1 sole: k1, ssk, k to 3 sts before end of sole, k2tog, k1 repeat rounds 1-3 once more (you'll then have 20sts each on instep and sole), then repeat rounds 2 + 3 three times (you'll now have 14sts each on instep and sole) then always repeat round 3 untill you have 6sts each on instep and sole.
finishing:
leaving a tail of at least 8 inches, break yarn and close the toe using Kitchener stitch. weave in the ends. then knit a second sock and enjoy!

about this pattern:
Guglielmo is one of the male protagonists in ‘Cosi fan tutte' (Thus Do They All, K. 588) a drama giocoso in two acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The opera is the wry tale of two young men, Ferrando and Guglielmo, who place a bet on fidelity, putting their fiancées, the 2 sisters Dorabella and Fiordiligi, to the test. The men pretend to go off to war but return in disguise as dashing foreign soldiers, each intent on seducing the other's lady. Managing through various tricks to win over the initially reluctant women, the suitors become uneasy with their antics, and once the deception is unmasked, the four reunite. But who pairs up with whom in the end remains a mystery. Work these socks in a sturdy wool/nylon blend and you'll have dashing boot socks, or work them in a luxuriously soft yarn - perhaps with a bit of cashmere content - and you'll get the nicest bed socks ever. "boot or bed’ relates quite nicely to the opera's story, but: Honi soit qui mal y pense...
