please read before you start: this pattern is perfect if you want to make the most out of that one ball of precious yarn. if you work the pattern as written with Zealana Air, you'll use the whole ball nearly to the last yard. so be careful: should you want to lengthen the cuff, make the mitts wider or otherwise larger, then you'll need more yarn! due to the ribbed nature of the pattern stitch, these mitts fit a wide range of hand circumferences (woman's small to large) If you know you knit very tightly or if you knit for very large hands, then knit with a larger needle size (to get a larger gauge) and/or use a thicker yarn.
pattern:
cuff picot edge: with larger needles loosely cast on 54 sts and join to begin working in the round. knit 4 rounds. work one eyelet round like this: \*[yo, k2tog] repeat from \* to end of round. knit 5 rounds. fold the cast-on edge at the eyelet round to the Ws (= inside of the tube). then, \*pick up 1 loop from
increase round:
change to smaller needles and work 1 increase round as follows: now you have 60 sts on the needles.
cuff:
start working the cuff chart. repeat each chart line 5 times to complete one round on the needles. work rounds 1-6 four times (i.e. 24 rounds all together). cuff is now about 3.25" / 8 cm long.
cuff chart:

thumb gusset and hand: change back to larger needles, start working the hand chart (see last page of this pattern).place stitch markers after stitches 55 and 58 (i.e. the markers are at the places marked in red on the hand chart). ATTENTION: the hand chart is worked differently for right and left hand, since stitches 1 to 54 of the hand charts are repeated differently for left and right mitt, so make sure to work one mitt for the left hand and a second mitt for the right hand!

here are some explanations on how to interpret the hand chart:
work rounds 1 to 30 according to the chart, increasing 2 stitches inside the marked section every 4th round eight times while at the same time working stitches 1 to 54 as indicated at the bottom of the chart: for the left mitt: work stitches 1- 12 twice, then 25-30 five times for the right mitt: work stitches 1-6 five times, then 31-42 twice in round 31 you place the thumb stitches on hold like this: [k5, p1]9 times, k1, remove the markers, put the next 19 sts on a piece of waste yarn, cast on 3 sts using the backwards loop cast-on, kl, p1 (now you have 60sts on the needles) work rounds 32 to 48 as charted, then proceed as follows:
decrease round:
for left mitt only work 1 round like this: p1, k3, p2tog, p1, kl, k2tog, p3, k3, p3, k1, k2tog, [p3, k3, p2tog, p1, k3]3times, p2 for right mitt only work 1 round like this: p1, k3, p2tog, p1, [k3, p3, k3, p2tog, p1]twice, k1, k2tog, p3, k3, p3, k1, k2tog, p3, k3, p2tog, pl, k3, p2 now you have 54 sts on your needles. continue for both mitts:
top picot edge:
knit 5 rounds work one eyelet round like this: \*[yo, k2tog] repeat from \* to end of round. knit 4 rounds bind off loosely, then fold the edge at the eyelet round to the Ws, break yarn leaving a tail about 1 foot (30cm) long and use this tail to tack the hem down on the inside.
thumb:
remove waste yarn and transfer the thereby exposed 19 sts onto the larger needles. join yarn and knit all 19 sts, then pick up 1 st from the gap between the life sts and the cast-on edge, pick up 3 sts from cast-on edge, then pick up 1 more st from the gap between cast-on edge and the life sts. now you have 24sts on your needles. work the next 11 rounds according to the thumb chart.
thumb chart:

having finished those 11 rounds, continue like this:
thumb picot edge:
knit 5 rounds. work one eyelet round like this: \*[yo, k2tog] repeat from \* to end of round. knit 4 rounds. bind off loosely, then break yarn leaving a tail at least 8"/ 20cmlong. fold the edge at the eyelet round to the WS and use the tail to tack the hem down.
finishing:
weave in the ends, using them to close any holes that may have appeared at the bottom of the thumb.enjoy!
about this pattern:
Fiordiligi is one of the female protagonists in Cosi fan tutte' (Thus Do They All, K. 588), a drama giocoso in two acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The opera is the wry tale of two young men, Ferrando and Guglielmo, who place a bet on fidelity, putting their fiancées, the 2 sisters Dorabella and Fiordiligi, to the test. The men pretend to go off to war but return in disguise as dashing foreign soldiers, each intent on seducing the other's lady. Managing through various tricks to win over the initially reluctant women, the suitors become uneasy with their antics, and once the deception is unmasked, the four reunite. But who pairs up with whom in the end remains a mystery. These mitts are a little luxury. It's up to you whether you wear them to impress a fiance, lover or husband or simply to enjoy them yourself. In any case they will make you feel quite special and your hands will be nice and warm.
