Anamorphosic Fibs: Knitting Pattern Inspired by Fibonacci Sequence for Stranded Colorwork Socks

These socks are inspired by the Fibonacci sequence worked on the diagonal. An anamorphosis is an image executed in trick perspective so that it is distorded when seen. They are mirrored, so there are two leg charts: chart A and chart B. Yarn: Fingering 4 plies sock yarn in two contrasting colors : MC (main color) and CC (contrasting color). I used Pro Lana Meine Wolle 400m/100gr, MC in dark and CC in light. Sizes small and medium : MC: 70gr / 280m / 310yds - CC: 50gr / 200m / 220yds Size large: MC: 75gr / 300m / 330yds - CC : 55gr / 220m / 240yds. Needles: one circular (32 ") 2,25mm (US 1) or DNP. Notions: stitch marker (if needed), tapestry needle. Techniques: stranded: I used the MC as the dominant color. As an English knitter who holds one yarn in each hand, I kept the MC in my left hand. If you are holding both yarns with one hand, hold the MC under the CC. It's not necessary to catch floats, except around needles change. To help keep the stranded yarn loose, I knitted these socks inside out to lengthen floats. Gauge: in stranded: 9 sts x 9 row per inch. Sizes: small (68 sts) - medium (72sts) - large (76sts). Feel free only to print the three chart pages according to the chosen size.

CUFF

Cast on 68 (72,76) sts with MC (l used the German twisted cast-on). Join in the round, being careful not to twist. Knit one round in MC. Join CC and work in corrugated ribbing tor 12 rds: Rds 1 to 4: P1 in MC, (K2 in CC, P2 in MC) to one before end of Rd, P1 in MC. Rds 5 to 8: P1 in CC, (K2 in MC, P2 in CC) to one before end of Rd, P1 in CC. Rds 9 to 12: repeat Rds 1 to 4. Next round: K in MC. LEG Work chart A for one sock and chart B for the other sock. Each chart is repeated 4 times in the round : 17x4=68 (18x4=72, 19x4=76) sts. Rd 1 to Rd 25 (26, 29) are repeated one more time = 50 (52, 58) rds. It is possible to shorten or lengthen as desired.

Heel flap:

The heel flap is knit back and forth on the next 34 (36, 38) sts using the 《 eye of partridge 》 stitch pattern in MC only. Let CC drop (don't cut the yarn) and work in MC: Set up Row 1 (RS): K to end of round. Set up Row 2 (WS): sl1, P to end of round. Row 1 (RS): (sl1, K1) 17 (18, 19) times. Row 2 (WS): sl1, P to end of row. Row 3 (RS): sl1, (sl1, K1) 16 (17, 18) times, K1. Row 4 (WS): sl1, P to end of row. Repeat these last 4 rows 7 times. Repeat rows 1 - 2 one more time. There are 32 rows ending with a wrong side.

Heel turn:

Row1 (RS): sl1, K18 (20, 22), SSK, K1, turn. Row2 (WS): sl1, P5 (7, 9) P2tog, P1, turn. Row3 (RS): sl1, K to 1 before the gap, SSK, K1, turn. Row4 (WS): sl1, P to 1 before the gap, P2tog, P1, turn. Repeat rows 3 and 4 until all sts on each side are worked, ending with a WS row. There are 20 (22, 24) sole sts.

GUSSET

Resume knitting in the round by first picking up gusset sts. Pick up gusset sts: Start at the right side of the heel flap: with CC (which was waiting for that) pick up 1st in the gap (between instep and heel flap) and 16 sts along right side of the heel flap. Starting with CC and alternating between CC and MC, knit sole sts and also pick up 16 sts along left side of heel flap and 1 st in the gap. There are 54, (56, 58) sole and gusset sts : 17+20+17 (17+22+17, 17+24+17) and 34 (36, 38) instep sts. Beginning of the round is now at the beginning of the instep. Gussetdecreases: Work instep sts according to chart A (or chart B). Work sole and gusset sts according to chart C (Rows 1 to 20). Upon completion of these section, there are 34 (36, 38) sole sts remaining.

FOOT

Instep: Continue and repeat leg chart A (or chart B). Sole: Repeat rows 21 to 24 of chart C. Work both charts until foot measures about 2 inch / 5cm shorter than desired length.

TOES

Repeat each row of chart D twice in the round: Rds 1 to 19 (22, 23). There are 24 sts left, end with Kitchener stitch. Weave in the four ends and wear happily.

KEY

K: knit P: purl SSK: slip1 knitwise, slip 1 knitwise, knit both stitches together through the back loop. K2tog: knit 2 stitches together. P2tog: purl 2 stitches together.
