Cuff

C/o 70 sts and distribute sts evenly across 4 needles. Join, being careful not to twist. Mark the beginning of the round with a stitch marker if needed. Work in k1 p1 rib for 2.5cm (1 inch). Knit one round, then begin pattern. Work pattern until piece measures 6 inches in total, or until desired length. End on either row 3 or 7.

Heel Flap

The heel will be worked in a slip-stitch pattern to complement the rest of the sock. Feel free to knit it plain if you want to. Row 1: Sl1, k35, slip any remaining sts across to the next needle - they will now be part of the instep. Row 2: Sl1, purl all sts. Row 3: Sl1, k1, sl1, sl1, k1. Repeat. Row 4: Sl1, purl all sts. Row 5: Sl1, knit all sts. Repeat rows 2-5 until heel flap is 6cm long (or the length you want), ending on a purl row.

Turn Heel

Row 1: Sl1, k15, k2tog, k1. Turn work. Row 2: Sl1, p2, p2tog, p1. Turn work. Row 3: Sl1, k3, k2tog, k1. Turn work. Row 4: Sl1, p4, p2tog, p1. Turn work. Row 5: Sl1, k5, k2tog, k1. Turn work. Row 6: Sl1, p6, p2tog, p1. Turn work. Keep repeating these rows, increasing one knit or purl stitch per round until all sts are worked, ending on a purl row. Knit across all sts, and using same needle pick up 19 sts along side of heel flap (using slipped st loops) - this will now be known as Needle One. Using a Needles Two and Three, knit across instep in pattern. Using a Needle 4, pick up 19 sts along side of heel flap and knit 8 sts from Needle One. The beginning of the round is now the middle of the heel.

Gusset

Decrease Round

Needle One: Knit across to where you picked up sts, then knit t.b.l to last 3 sts, k2tog, knit 1 t.b.l. Needles Two and Three: Knit as per rib pattern Needle Four: Knit 1 t.b.l, SSK, knit t.b.l to end of picked up sts, knit to end. Knitting t.b.l is only used for this first round - it closes any looseness in the picked up sts.

Needle One and Four knit plain, Needles Two and Three knit in pattern.

Repeat the Decrease and Plain rounds, until you have a total of 70 sts on your needles again. (36 on Needles One and Four, 34 on Needles Two and Three) Now continue without decreases until the sock is the length required - normally the length of foot minus 3.5cm/1.5ins. Slip one st from Needle One, to Needle Two. Ensure that there are 35 sts on Needles One and Four, and 35 sts on Two and Three.

Shape Toe

Row 1: Knit one round. Row 2: Needle One - Knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. Needle 2 - K1, ssk, knit to end. Needle 3 - Knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. Needle 4 - K1, ssk, knit to end. Repeat these 2 rows, 9 times (34 sts remain). Knit one round. Now repeat Row 2, 5 times (14 sts remain). Knit to end of Needle One. Slip all the sts from Needle Four to Needle One, and the sts from Needle Two to Needle Three.

Finishing

Graft toe sts, weave in ends.
