SHALOTT SOCKS
By Kristle Chester Ed. Joeli Caparco

Description
Naming my socks after a cursed Arthurian lady didn't seem to have any implications. So when several of my test knitters asked me if the socks were cursed, I blithely told them “no". I spoke too soon. These socks are cursed. A Japanese short row toe, arch shaping, gussets, and a smooth traditional heel (toe-up) make these socks one of the most comfortable pairs I own. (And the short row techniques eliminate the little pips you get with wrap and turn. Believe it or not, some people can feel the wraps, but they won't feel these.) Watch them closely because a curse is on them if they stay and they might just grow legs and walk out of your closet.

Pattern Notes
For best results, use the recommended techniques. However, if the techniques make you uncomfortable, Elizabeth's Zimmerman's sewn bind-off may be substituted for the tubular bind-off. Another short row technique may also be substituted for the toes. Be advised that that you may need to alter your row count if you select a different technique.

Heel
Tip: It helps to think of the yo as yarn arounds because the yarn is making a full loop around the needle before you $\mathrm{k/p}$ the next stitch. Heel Setup: sm, work Chart B, sm, $\boldsymbol{\mathrm{k}}$ to $1^{\mathrm{st}}$ gusset marker, and sm. Heel Row 1 (RS): k the heel sts and turn. Heel Row 2 (WS): yo, pl, pm (1st heel marker), p the remaining heel sts, and turn. Heel Row 3 (RS): yo, k1, pm (2nd heel marker), k to the 1st heel marker, remove the Ist heel marker, and turn. Heel Row 4 (WS): yo, pl, pm (1st heel marker), p to the 2nd heel marker, remove the 2nd heel marker, and turn.

Option 2: Egg Shaped Use this option if the recipient has normal feet. Work rows 3-4 until there are 5 sts between the 1st heel marker and the 2nd heel marker. Your last row is a p (ws) row.

Turning the Heel
Heel Row 5 (RS): k to 1 st before the 1st heel marker, sl the st next to the marker p-wise, and remove the marker. Transfer the sl st back to the left needle being careful to not twist it. K2tog the returned st with the next st. $\ast\mathrm{K}2$ tog the yo with the st to the yo's left, repeating up to the last yo.\* (Do not work the last yo.) Turn. Heel Row 6 (WS): sl 1p, p to 1 st before the 2nd heel marker. S1 1k. Remove the marker. Sl 1k. Return the two sl sts back to the left needle, keeping the twist caused by the $\mathbf{k}\cdot$ wise sls, p2tog-tbl. $\ast\mathrm{Sl}$ 1k, sl 1k, slipping the yo and the st separately. Return the two sl sts to the left needle, keeping the twist caused by the $\mathbf{k}$ -wise sls. P2tog-tbl.\* Repeat up to the last yo. (Do not work the last yo.) Turn.
Back of the Heel
Heel Row 7 (RS): $^{*}\mathrm{sl}$ 1p, $\mathrm{k}1\ast$ up to the last heel st (the remaining yo). Sl the yo $\boldsymbol{\mathrm{k}}$ -wise. K1 from the gusset. Pass over the slipped yo. Turn. Heel Row 8 (WS): sl 1p, p up to the last st heel st (the remaining yo). Sl the yo k-wise and return it to the left needle. $\mathtt{p}\,2$ together (p2tog) the yo and 1 st from the gusset. Turn. Heel Row 9 (RS): $^{*}\mathrm{sl}$ 1p, $\mathrm{k}1\ast$ up to the last heel st. S1 1k. K1 st from the gusset. Pass over the sl st. Turn. Heel Row 10 (WS): sl 1p, p up to the last heel st. P2tog the last heel st and the first gusset st. Turn. Repeat Rows 9-10 12 (14, 15) times. You will have 1 st left between the heel sts and each top marker. Heel Row 11 (RS): $^{*}\mathrm{sl}$ 1p, k1\* to 2 sts before 1st top marker, sl 1p, k1.
Joining the Heel to the Body
Beg working in the round. Rnd 81 (89, 99): sm, work Chart B (pick up where you left off), sm, k1. With your left needle, lift the left side of the st two sts below the st on the right needle, moving for back to front. Sl the lifted side k-wise. Transfer the sl st back to the left needle, keeping the twist. K2tog the lifted leg with the first heel st. K to $1^{\mathrm{st}}$ top marker. Faux Heel Continuation Rnd 82 (90, 100): sm, work Chart B, sm, k1, \*sl 1p, $\mathrm{k}1^{*}$ to the $1^{\mathrm{st}}$ top marker. Rnd 83 (91, 101): sm, work Chart B, sm, k to $1^{\mathrm{st}}$ top marker. Repeat rnds 82-83 (90-91, 100-101) 4 times. Small Rnd 90: sm, work Chart B, sm, k6, LLI, k7, LLI, k6. Medium Rnd 98: sm, work Chart B, sm, k11, LLI, k12. Large Rnd 110: sm, work Chart B, sm, k27.
Rnd 91 (99, 111): sm, work Chart C until $2^{\mathrm{nd}}$ top marker.
Remove marker. Continue with Chart C to end. Rnd 92 (100, 112): sm, work Chart C to end. Rnd 93 (101, 113): sm, work Chart C to end. Rnd 94 (102, 114): sm, work Chart C to end. Repeat rnds 91-94 (99-102, 111-114) 13 (14, 15) times. Small Rnd 143: $\ast\boldsymbol{1}\times2,\,\boldsymbol{\mathrm{p}}2^{\ast}$ Medium Rnd 155: $\ast\mathbf{k}2$ $\mathtt{p}2^{*}\,3$ times for a total of 12 sts, k2, pl, LLI p-wise, $\ast1\!\!\times\!2$ $\mathtt{p}2^{*}$ to end. Large Rnd 171: $\ast1\!\!\times\!2$ $\mathtt{p}2^{*}\ 4$ times for a total of 16 sts, k1, LLI, p2, $\ast1\!\!\times\!2$ $\mathtt{p}2^{*}\ 8$ times. You are now on the 56th st. K1, LLI, p2, $\ast1\!\!\times\!2$ , $\mathtt{p}2^{*}$ to end.

Word 8 rounds of $\ast\mathbf{k}2$ , $\mathsf{p}2^{*}$ rib for all sizes.
Bind Off
Note: If you are not using the recommended tubular bindoff for double rib, work 1 additional rnd of ribbing and skip straight to the bind-off. Rnd 151 (163, 179): $^{*1}\mathrm{k}1$ , sl 1p, pl, sl $1\mathrm{p^{*}}$ to end. BO using tubular bind-off for double rib.
Finishing
Weave in the yarn ends and wash the sock according the yarn manufacturer's instructions. While blocking is not necessary (the lace stretches over your foot), blocking is recommended if you are giving the socks as a gift.

References and Inspiration
These socks arefuencd by many diffrent source, prmarilyby my father, whrfuses to wear anything that he cafl and the works of Elizabeth Zimmerman, who prototyped her arch-shaped socks many years ago. The tubular bind-off for double rib is almost entirely the work of Monste Stanley. Her explanation of this technique can be found on page 88 of the Reader's Digest Knitter's Handbook, 1993. My explanation of the technique and understanding of it is different from the explanation she offers. However, the genius of doing this all on one needle is entirely hers. Due credit also goes to her and her wonderful section on short rows (pg. 101) that started me searching for a better method than wrap and turn. The toe construction is my own work, based on a standard wrap and turn short row toe, but the safety pins were not my idea. Nonaknits is where I first saw this method. The heel was ispirdbymultipe sources, primarily ElizabethZimmerman's Conventional Hl found onpg. 10 ofKniing Without Tears, Fireside Edition, 1995. The yo technique and hole closing method were both ah-ha moments. Thelaeribngwas mistakItwassupd tbele lact Itrapewthins whImademyathd the error, so I used it.
