3M - (My Modified Mittens :)
Size 5 DPNs. Try a Tubular cast-on! Using waste yarn cast-on half needed stitches +2 (\*24 for 44 stitch rib) with backwards loop method. Drop slip knot. With solid color yarn (Will end up with 45 stitches) Set-up row: \*K1, YO \* repeat - ending with K1. Row 1: \* sl1 wyif, k1 wyib \* repeat - end with sl1 wyif. Row 2: \* k1 wyib, sl1 wyif \* repeat - end with k1 wyib. Repeat rows 1 and 2 once more. Join/knit in round: Slip last stitch to needle 1 - knit first 2 together. (20-12-12) K1, P1—do 1st round in main color. Begin next row with knit stitches in MC yarn and purl stitches in Contrast . (10 rows ribbing) Do cuff chart and cut CC. Knit 3 rows . Increase 4 stitches : Kf/b, K19,Kf/b x2, K19, Kf/b Knit 4 more rows and begin gusset: RIGHT MITTEN ThumbGusset Round 1: K24; Kf/b, K5, Kf/b, knit to end. Round 2 and all even numbered rounds: Knit. Round 3: K24, Kf/b, K7, Kfb, knit to end. Round 5: K24, Kf/b, K9, Kfb, knit to end. Round 7: K24, Kf/b, K11, Kf/b, knit to end. Round 9: K24, Kf/b, K12, Kf/b, knit to end. Round 11: K24, Kf/b, K13, Kf/b, knit to end. Round 13: K24, Kf/b, K14, Kf/b, knit to end. Round 15: K24, K1, move next 16 stitches to holder, cast on 2 stitches, knit to end.
Upper Palm and Fingers
Knit in round until mitten meets the tip of the longest finger. (mine 16 - 18 rows from thumb opening) Decrease: Round 1: \*K4, K2tog \* Repeat to end of round. Round 2: Knit. Round 3: \*K3, K2tog \* Repeat to end of round. Round 4: Knit. Round 5: \*K2, K2tog \* Repeat to end of round. Round 6: Knit. Round 7: \*K1, K2tog \* Repeat to end of round. Round 8 - 9: Knit. Round 10: \*K2tog. Repeat to end of round. Round 11: Knit. Cut yarn, leaving 8 inch tail. Weave through remaining loops, tighten and fasten off.
Thumbs
Slip the 16 thumb stitches onto 3 needles. (6-6-4) Round 1: K16, then pick up 6 stitches at gap and knit 2tog 3 times. (6-6-7) Round 2: Knit Round 3: Knit to last 2 stitches, K2tog. Knit in round until long enough to cover tip of thumb. (16-18 rows) K2tog for a round. Knit one last round. Cut yarn, leaving 8 inch tail.


LEFT MITTEN Cuff and Lower Palm Same as for right mitten.
Thumb Gusset
Arrange last 7 stitches of needle 2 alone: (17-7- 24) Round 1: K17, Kf/b, K5, Kf/b, K24. Round 2 and all even numbered rounds: Knit. Round 3: K17, Kf/b, K7, Kfb, K24. Round 5: K17, Kf/b, K9, Kf/b, K24. Round 7: K17, Kf/b, K11, Kf/b, K24. Round 9: K18, Kf/b, K12, Kf/b, K24. Round 11: K19, Kf/b, K13, Kf/b, K24. Round 13: K20, Kf/b, K14, Kf/b, K24. Round 15: K21, move next 16 stitches to a holder, cast on 2 stitches, K1, K24 Rearrange stitches. (12-12-24) UpperPalmandFingers Same as for right mitten.
FINISHING
Weave in tails. Use the tail at the beginning of the thumb to tighten up and fill any holes at intersection. This pattern modified by Laurie Walton using inspiration from 2 different patterns: "Fire on the Mountain" by Julie Sprague was free to participants of Sock Madness 3. "Fried Chicken Mittens" by Ellen Mason is a brilliant free mitten pattern. Dark squares of chart is contrasting color of pattern.
