about this pattern:
It's during Compline in St. Mungo's Cathedral of Glasgow when everything begins in the 15th-century murder mystery "The Harper's Quine" by Pat Mcintosh. In this historical adventure, lawyer to-be Gil Cunningham is assisted by Alys, the clever and independent daughter of a master mason in his efforts to disentangle the complex case of a murdered woman found in the grounds of the Cathedral. Compline' (Night Prayer) is the final church Office of the day in the Christian tradition of canonical hours, which divide day and night for the purpose of prayers. From early on, a functional part of these prayers was vocal music - best known today in its form of Gregorian chant. Nobody who heard Gregorian music in a majestic church building like the gothic cathedral of Glasgow will ever forget it. In the lines of the sock pattern you can see the vertical columns and ribbed vaults of St. Mungo's with the neumes (musical notation) of Gregorian chant in the center back of the leg.
