SHEEPCRAIGTAMMY&MITTS
Traditional Fair-lsle Design
by Bonnie Dean Sheep Craig is a high promontory on the southeast portion of the Shetland Island of Fair Isle. This traditional tammy is my TGKA Master Hand Knitting Program final hat design and features a cable caston for a firm but flexible edge; 1x1 corrugated rib; a peerie, border, border, peerie configuration; and finally a patterned wheel of seven sections with vertical double decreases between each section. Coordinating mitts are included.

THE PATTERN
CABLE CAST ON INSTRUCTIONS: Make slip knot with 5" tail. Place slip knot on left needle. Insert right needle into slip knot and wrap working yarn as if to knit and pull the loop through. Rotate right needle clockwise, inserting left needle into the loop from left to right, then remove right needle. \*Insert the right needle between the 2 sts on the needle and tighten the loop. Wrap the working yarn around right needle as if to knit, pulling yarn loop through. Rotate right needle clockwise, insert left needle from left to right, and remove right needle; rep from\* until the required number of sts is CO.
TAMMY
Using cable CO and midnight, CO 140 sts. PM and join to work in rnd, being careful not to twist sts. Rnds 1-3 (RS): \*K1 with midnight, p1 with fjord; rep from\* to end of rnd (i.e. rep the 2 st multiple 70 times). Work 15 total rnds of corrugated rib per Rib Chart. Inc Rnd: With midnight, \*k3, M1L, k3, M1L, k4, M1L; rep from\* to end of rnd - 182 sts. In fjord, knit 1 rnd. Joining and breaking off colors as needed, work 5 rnds of Peerie A Chart, working the 7 st multiple 26 times. With cornfield, knit 1 rnd plain. Work 11 rnds of Border Chart once, working the 14 st multiple 13 times. Work 3 rnds plain with midnight. Work 11 rnds of Border Chart again, working the 14 st multiple 13 times. Work 1 rnd plain with cornfield. Work 5 rnds of Peerie B Chart, working the 7 st multiple 26 times. With fjord, knit 1 rnd plain. Work Wheel Chart 26 st multiple 7 times, working vertical double decrease as indicated on the Wheel Chart, by slipping 2 sts together knitwise, k1, p2sso. Switch to dpns when there are too few sts to work on circular needle. Final decreases are ssk in rnd 35. Break yarn. Weave tail through remaining 7 sts securely and fasten off.
FOR BOTH MITTS
Using cable CO and midnight, CO 6O sts. PM and join to work in rnd, being careful not to twist sts. Rnds 1-3 (RS): \*K1 with midnight, p1 with fjord; rep from\* to end of rnd (i.e. rep the 2 st multiple 30 times). Work 15 total rnds of corrugated rib per Rib Chart. Inc rnd: With midnight, \*k6, M1L; rep from\* to end of rnd. - 70 sts. In fjord, knit 1 rnd.
RIGHT MITT
Starting at marker, work rnd 1 Thumb Chart, pm, work rnd 1 of Right Hand Chart. Cont working Thumb Chart followed by Right Hand Chart for each rnd, ending on rnd 25. Place 27 thumb gusset sts on waste yarn. Next rnd: Using backward loop, CO 1 st to close the gap in the hand section to work in the rnd; complete rnd. Next rnd: Dec 1 st including the CO st in previous rnd by k2tog with the following st in color defined by Right Hand Chart. Complete remainder of 35 rnds of Right Hand Chart. In fjord, knit 1 rnd. In midnight, knit 1 rnd. Work 8 rnds of Top of Mitt Rib Chart. BO with midnight. Place thumb sts on 3 dpns, pm, and join to knit in the rnd. Complete Thumb Chart rnds 26 and 27. Try on mitt to determine whether to adjust thumb st count up or down by 1 st. In fjord, knit 1 rnd, using M1L to inc or k2tog to dec thumb st count to an even number. Work 8 rnds of Top of Mitt Rib Chart once. BO with midnight.
LEFT MITT
Starting at marker, work rnd 1 of Left Hand Chart. Pm, work rnd 1 of Thumb Chart. Cont working Left Hand Chart followed by Thumb Chart for each round, ending on rnd 25. Place 27 thumb gusset sts on waste yarn. Work rnd 26, ending at the beginning of the thumb, CO one st with backward loop, joining hand section to work in the rnd. On rnd 27, k2tog the previous rnd increased st and the st following, with the color as determined by the Left Hand Chart. Cont as for right mitt to complete.
FINISHING
Use tails to close hole between hand and thumb gusset. Weave in all tails. Block after soaking in cool water with an appropriate amount of wool wash per package instructions for at least 20 minutes and removing excess water by rolling in a towel without wringing. FOR TAMMY: Place on a tam frame or 10" plate with the plate edge at fold line (plain knitting line between borders). Support the plate or frame underneath to allow the smoothed, hanging tam edge with lower border to dry. Dry completely before removing. FOR MITTS: Block to finished dimensions.
THE CHARIS-TAMMY

All charts are worked in the round by reading each chart row from right to left.

Bonnie Dean
Bonnie Dean became a TKGA Master Knitter in April 2015. She lives in Billings, MT with her husband Edward. Their Boulder, CO son Gavin introduced Bonnie to the knowledge of Chief Left Hand, a Southern Arapaho Chief who lived in the mid-1800's near Boulder. She launched her company Chief Left Hand Knits in February 2014, incorporating her love of hand knitting and her longstanding love of decorative and fine arts of Native American artists along with the beauty of the spaces around Boulder where Chief Left Hand wintered. Bonnie is enjoying applying her experience in fabric-based garment construction and design to a new medium. Her designs focus on modern embellishment, texture and cables.
