Two-Color, Two-Sided Cable Scarf
Designed by Naomi Frost

This scarf is a two-color cable pattern that has no “wrong"’ side. It is best for the intermediate knitter as the color changes can be tricky, even though the cable is a simple, single-twist cable. A confident beginner could probably handle it pretty well if they follow the color change instructions carefully. The scarf pictured above was made from hand-spun alpaca from Crystal Valley Alpacas in Woodland, Washington (www.crystalvalleyalpacas.com). Please send any feedback you may have on this to the designer: naomifrost@comcast.net \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*+\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\* The trick to making this work is to make sure the yarn color not being worked is held in the correct position as to not interfere with the pattern's facing stitches. See color change instructions after pattern. Remember, you will always work each stitch with the same color yarn of the stitch you are working into. Size 7 needles 2 balls of contrasting color sport weight yarn (C1 and C2) 1 cable needle Cast on 20 stitches with C1, and 20 stitches with C2 Foundation Row: With C2, (k1, p1) 8 times. Put last 4 C2 stitches on cable needle (With C1, k1 from cable needle, with C2, p1 from knitting needle) twice. (With C2, k1 from cable needle, with C1, p1 from knitting needle) twice. With C1, (k1, p1) 8 times. Row 1-3: Slip 1, pl, (k1, pl) to end, switching colors to match working stitch color (\*see color change instructions for the 8 center stitches that alternate colors\*). Row 4: Slip 1, p1, (k1, p1) to first color change. Slip 4 stitches onto cable needle and hold in back of work. Work next 4 stitches in pattern then work the 4 stitches on the cable needle in pattern. (k1, p1) to end. Repeat rows 1-4 until 1”’ short of desired length. Repeat rows 1-3 once more then bind offin klp1 pattern. \*Color change instructions\* When working the cable stitches you will be alternating between the two colors. It is super important to keep the color you are not working held back away from the stitch you are working with in a manner that it will not show through on the wrong side of the pattern. When the pattern stitches start with opposite color than you started the row with (for this example I've started the row with C1 and the pattern starts with C2). Work in klp1 in C1 up to the cable pattern stitches, and do the color work as follows: 1)Drop C1, pickup and C2 knit the first stitch (being careful to NOT cross yarns).

2) Next, move the C2 yarn to the front and hold out of the way (toward the stitches just worked) as pictured below:

3) Then bring C1 in front and purl the next stitch.

4) Next, move C1 to the back and hold out of the way (toward the stitches just worked). 5) Bring C2 to the back. 6) Repeat steps 1-5. At this point, your work should look like this:

7) Now, hold C2 out of the way and pick up C1 and knit the next stitch.

8) Next, move the C1 yarn to the front and hold out of the way (toward the stitches just worked). 9) Bring C2 to front and purl the next stitch 10) Move C2 to the back 11) Move C1 to the back 12) Repeat steps 7-10 (leaving Clin front) and finish row with C2.

When the pattern stitches start with same color that you started the row with (in this example, I've started the row with C2 and the pattern starts with C2). Work in klp1 in C2 up to the cable pattern stitches, and do the color work as follows: 1)Knit the first stitch with C1. 2) Move the C1 yarn to the front and hold out of the way (toward the stitches just worked). 3) Bring C2 in front and purl the next stitch. 4)Bring C2 to the back and hold out of the way (toward the stitches just worked), 5) Bring C1 to the back 6) Repeat steps 1-5. 7) Now, hold C1 out of the way and pick up C2 and knit the next stitch 8)Then move the C2 yarn to the front and hold out of the way (toward the stitches just worked) 9) Bring C1 to front and purl the next stitch 10) Move C1 to the back 11) Move C2 to the back 12) Repeat steps 7-12 and then finish in pattern with C2.
