16" size 4 circ, l6" size 5 circ 2 skeins rowan milk cotton dk using tubular c/o, c/o 96 stitches. join in round, pm, complete tubular c/o set-up. lxl rib for 2 inches (about 12 rows). k 2 rounds. change to size 5 needle. begin chart. Key s2,k1,p2sso/s2,p1,p2sso yo k1/p1

repeat chart around hat. even rows are all knit. there will be 8 repeats of the chart around the hat. repeat the first 10 rounds a total of 5 times for five vertical pattern repeats. next round: k2tog around. knit 6 rounds straight stockinette, thread yarn through loops, tighten and fasten off. thread elastic thread through the cast-on edge to add spring. wonderful lace charting app at http://jacquie.typepad.com/Charts/knitChart.htm
