Socks For All Seasons: April 2010
April Fool's Socks
by Star Athena

These socks are both reallysimple and really unusual. The prank here is that a simple pair of socks emerge in the strangest fashion. Because the pair is knit allat once, there wilbe no second sock syndrome.. And if you can't bear cutting the socks open, you can always wear your creation as a cowl!
Foot circumference:
7 (8, 9, 10) inches 17.5 (20, 23, 25.5 cm) unstretched. Will stretch to fit 8 (9, 10, 11) inches 20 (23, 25.5, 28 cm). Yarn: Any Fingering, Sport or DK weight yarn that gives you proper gauge. Sample shown: Claudia Hand Painted Yarns Sport [1 $00\%$ Merino; 225yd/206m per 100g/ 3.53oz skein]; color: Summer Rose; 1 skein.

Waste yarn in the same thickness in a contrasting color, 4 yards. Gauge: This pattern is written for four different gauges:

Needles: 1 set of $32^{\,\mathfrak{s}}$ circular needles (magic loop) OR 2 sets of 24" circulars (two circulars) OR double pointed needles. Notions: Tapestry needle, scissors, and (optional) a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of the round. Sizes: This pattern is written for four sizes: (See foot circumference to determine best size) Women's Small (Women's Medium/Men's Small, Women's Large/Men's Medium, Men's Large) NOTES: This intermediate sock pattern is worked from the toe up. The technique is unusual, but it is not too hard. The toe is worked, then the short-row heel, the leg, the cuff, a few rounds of waste yarn are worked, then another cuff, leg, heel and toe. This produces a two-ended sock which will be cut open at the section with the waste yarn. Live stitches are picked up and bound off. This technique produces a pair of socks knit as one piece If you are a confident knitter with a lot of sock making experience, you may substitute a gusseted heel with heel flap for the short-row heel if you prefer. If you are that sort of knitter, you probably already knew that! Foot Chart: Find gauge and foot circumference. The number in the box is the circumference number. If you are in between two numbers, pick the smaller number. Foot Circumference

Total: 40 (48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 68, 72, 80, 88) sts.
This pattern is written using the magic loop or 2-circular method, where half the stitches are on Needle 1 (N1), and the other half are on Needle 2 (N2). You can easily divide these stitches again for double pointed needles.

Half of your sts are on N1 (sole) and the second half are on N2 (instep). \*I used Judy's Magic Cast On found here: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEspring06/FEATmagiccaston.html

Steeking:
Using scissors, carefully cut across the center of one st worked in waste yarn to open up sock tube. Gently continue to cut open sock, along the center of waste yarn sts until entire sock is cut open. Do not cut through both layers of the sock at once. Instead, cut around one layer of the knitted fabric.

unpick waste yarn and replace live sts onto needles. Pick up long tail of original working yarn and BO all sts either using a sewn bind-off or some other stretchy bind off of your choice\*. Repeat for second sock. \*I used Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off found here: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEfall09/FEATjsbo.php

April Fool's Day is observed everywhere. No one really knows where or when it started. My favorite pranks involve trying to get people to believe ridiculous things. One such gag was orchestrated by the BBC in 1957 regarding a bumper crop of spaghetti trees. Check out the full story here: http:// www.youtube.com/watch? v=27ugSKW4-QQ
