Divide yarn:
To get the longest possible socks from your yarn it is a good idea to weigh the skein and divide it at the halfway point to give two balls of equal weight. Use one ball for each sock.
cast ow:
Use the commercial yarn for the cast on and toe. Cast on 20(23, 24) stitches using Judy's Magic cast on. K10(12, 12), pm, ktbl 10(12, 12), pm Toe: Rnd 1: \*k1, M1L, kto 1 st before marker, M1R, k1, sm; repeat from \* around Rnd 2: k around Repeat rounds one and two until there are 56(63, 70)sts. Work round two once more, removing second marker as you pass. Foot: The top of the foot is worked in pattern; the bottom is worked in stocking stitch. Switch to handspun yarn (if applicable). sm, k2(1, 2), work lace pattern with 2(2, 3) repeats, kto end of round. Repeat until foot is 5cm less than desired length.
Heel part 1:
These socks are worked with an afterthought heel. At this point you will work waste yarn into the sock to hold the heel stitches for later. Work the first 28(31, 36)sts as established. Knit the next 28(32, 36)sts using waste yarn instead of the working yarn. Slip these stitches back onto the left hand needle. Knit the stitches worked in waste yarn again using the working yarn. Remove the start of round maker, k2(1, 2), pm for start of round. The leg is worked in the lace pattern all round. Work lace pattern as established 8(9, 10) times around the leg. Repeat until the leg is your desired length.
Ribbing:
Change to commercial yarn (if applicable). \*k1, p1; repeat from \* around. Repeat for 10(12, 12) rounds, approximately 2.5(3.5, 3.5)cm. You can adjust the length of the ribbing by working more or fewer rounds. Cast off using the Surprisingly stretchy bind off.
Heel part 2:
Unpick the waste yarn from the sock, placing the live stitches that are revealed onto dpns or circular needle(s). Pick up an extra stitch in the gap between the leg and the sole on each side. The start of the round will be at this point on the left of the foot. Using the commercial yarn: Rnd 1: k29(33, 36), pm, k29(32, 36), pm Rnd 2: \*k1, ssk, k to 1 st before marker, k2tog, k1, sm; repeat from \* around Rnd 3: k around Repeat rounds two and three until 20(23, 24)sts remain. Weave in ends. Make a second sock to match the first using the second ball of yarn.
