Materials: Worsted Weight yarn (I used Deborah Norville Everyday) Barely Bulky (5) weight yarn ( Vickie Howell Sheepish, Red Heart Boutique Changes or similar yarn) Or hand-spun or hand-dyed worsted weight yarn ( 9-10-11 wpi) J (6mm) crochet hook (4 rounds of dc = 2 in; each starburst measures 2"); for some thicker ww yarns or if you crochet rather loose, you may want to use an I hook (5.5mm); and if you crochet tightly, you may need to go up in hook size.
