Voyanne Socks

Materials:
Yarn: any fingering weight yarn will work, the sample uses Louet Gems Merino in Terra Cotta. 400 yards should be enough to make the socks as long as you like them. (l used approximately 350 yards to make the sample pair.) Finished sizes: women's small, medium, or large; approximately 7 inches long for the cuff as written, approximately 7.5(8.5,9.5) inches around, unstretched, will stretch to fit a larger leg at the top. Larger cuff sizes can be achieved by going up in needle size for the leg portion. Gauge: 8 stitches = 1 inch ;: size 1 US (2.25mm), or size to obtain correct gauge. The pattern is written for ma( loop or two circulars, you may, of course, use DPNs if desired. Notes: There are three separate charts, one for each size. Each chart includes a separate boxed section that will be used for the foot. For the leg, you will use the whole chart. The directions are written for the small, with the medium and large sizes in parentheses. For example: Knit 2(3,4). Cuff:
Cast on 60(68,76) stitches, preferably by casting on over two needles held together, or another stretchy cast-on may be used. (I used the long-tail method.) Divide the stitches between needles as follows: 36(40,44) stitches on the front needle, 24(28,32) stitches on the back needle. Join to knit in the round without twisting, place a marker to indicate the end of the round, and begin ribbing asfollows: small size: p1, (k2, p2) twice, k2, p3, k2, p4, k2, p3, (k2, p2) twice, k2, p1, then (k2, p2) to end of round. medium size: p1, k2, p2, k2, p4, k2, p3, k2, p4, k2, p3, k2, p4, k2, p2, k2, p1 then (k2, p2) to end of round. large size: p1, (k2, p2) three times, k2, p3, k2, p4, k2, p3, (k2, p2) three times, k2, p1, then (k2, p2) to end of round. Repeat the one round for your size until the cuff measures 1 inch or desired length. You will now be working one repeat of the chart on the first 36(40,44) stitches, and double seed stitch for the last 24(28,32) stitches.
Double seed stitch:
r1 & 2: (p2, k2) r3 & 4: (k2, p2) Work all 26 rounds of the chart and double seed stitch three times total (78 rounds). You will now need to move three stitches on either side of the chart to the back needle, as follows: remove end of round marker, knit three, replace end of round marker, p2, k2, then work row 1 of the chart (ONLY the portion of the chart that is inside the box), k2, p2, move the next 3 stitches to the second needle. You will now be working the heel over the next 30(34,38) stitches.
Heel and Gusset:
Begin Heel Flap: Row 1: (slip 1, knit 1) across all heel flap stitches. Row 2: slip 1, purl 29(33,37). Row 3: slip 1, (slip 1, knit 1) across all heel flap stitches to last stitch, knit 1. Row 4: slip 1, purl 29(33,37). Repeat these rows for 2 to 2.5 inches, depending on your personal heel depth. End with row 2 or 4 (a purl row).
Turn Heel:
Row 1: slip 1, knit 17(19,21), ssk, k1, turn. Row 2: slip 1, purl 7, p2tog, p1, turn. Row 3: slip 1, knit to one stitch before the gap created by the turn, ssk, k1, turn. Row 4: slip 1, purl to one stitch before the gap created by the turn, p2tog, p1, turn. Repeat these last two rows until there are no remaining unworked stitches, ending with a purl row. You will have18(20,22) stitches remaining.
Begin Gusset:
Next row: slip 1, knit to end of heel stitches. With right side facing, pick up and knit 1 stitch in every slipped stitch along side of heel flap. Pick up and knit 1 stitch in the corner between heel flap and instep stitches. (You may wish to place a marker here to indicate the beginning of the instep.) P2, k2, then work across the instep stitches in the chart pattern beginning with row 2, (making sure to only work the stitches inside the interior box on the chart), k2, p2. Pick up and knit 1 stitch in the corner between the instep stitches and the other side of the heel flap, then pick up and knit 1 stitch in every slipped stitch along the other side of the heel flap. This should be the same number you picked up for the first side. Your pickup round is complete.
Shape Gusset:
You will now be decreasing two stitches every other round to shape the gusset area. Your rounds will begin with the bottom of foot stitches. (You will have worked part of the first round when you picked up the heel stitches a second ago.) Round 1: knit across bottom of foot stitches, knit instep stitches as established. Round 2: knit 1, ssk, knit to three stitches before instep, k2tog, k1. Work across instep as established. Repeat these two rounds until the total stitch count reaches 60(68,76).
Work Foot:
Continue working in pattern, knitting the bottom of foot stitches and knitting the chart pattern as established on the instep stitches, until the sock is 2 inches short of the end of the toe. You may end with any round of the instep pattern, though I recommend ending with rounds 1-3, rounds 12 or 13, or rounds 21-26.
Shape Toe:
Round 1: knit 1, ssk, knit to last three stitches of the bottom of foot, k2tog, k1. Knit 1, ssk, knit to last three stitches of instep, k2tog, k1. Round 2: knit all stitches. Repeat these two rounds 7(8,9) times total (you should have 32(36,40) stitches total), then repeat only round 1 until 16 stitches remain. Kitchener (or graft) these stitches, and weave in all loose ends on the wrong side. Knit the second sock the same as the first.
