TECHNIQUES AND ABBREVIATIONS

Please read the stitch guide carefully as if a stitch is created differently it will not have the same appearance as in the pattern. M1kw - pick up yarn from between needles and place on left needle so the yarn is at the front on the left and back on the right, knit this stitch. It's important to lift the new stitch correctly so that you aren't left with a big hole where the stitch is created, instead of a tiny v. M1Pw - pick up your yarn from between needles and place on left needle so the yarn is front on the left and back on the right, purl this stitch. M2PW - tightly purl, knit & purl into the same stitch - making three stitches from one.

M2KW - tightly knit, purl & knit into the same stitch - making three stitches from one. After making these, rearrange the next stitch before knitting it so that the stitch below the M2KW is not pulled out of shape. SLPO - Slip one stitch as you would knit it, knit the next stitch and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch. This creates a stitch that leans in the opposite direction from when you knit two stitches together.

KALYNA SOCKS

SK2P - Slip one stitch as you would knit it, knit the next two stitches together and pass the slipped stitch over the resulting knitted stitch. This creates the top of the heart. W&T pw- Wrap and Turn without working: Slip 1 stitch to right needle, pass yarn back, turn your work, pass the stitch back, then the yarn back. W&T kw Slip one stitch onto the right needle, pass yarn forward, slip stitch back onto left needle, turn your work, pass yarn forward again. PBF - Purl into the back then the front of the stitch to create two from one. Judy's Magic Cast-On - This is a way of casting on that looks as if it never happened - you are simply left with a neat row of Vs. This technique is well worth learning, and the good thing is that as it's at the start of your work, you can easily see if you have it right and start again if not. There are great instructions on the Internet for this technique, however, for those without Internet access right this moment I shall do my best to summarise: two needles in your left hand, pointing to the right, with your thumb keeping them in place. 12" or 30 cm along your yarn, make a fold. Loop the fold over the top needle so the tail is in the middle of the two needles and hold in place with your thumb. The yarn you'll wind around the top needle will be the tail (Tops & Tails). The yarn you'll wind around the bottom needle will be the one attached to the ball (Bottom Balls). A - Use your right hand to hold the yarn out in a v shape which must never be crossed about. Keeping the needles in line, you are going to wrap the ball yarn around the back outside to the front inside of thebottom needle. B - Still holding the V of yarn, next, bring your left hand towards you and your right hand away from you and wrap the top needle, around and through the middle of the needles with the tail yarn. Repeat A and B until you have sixteen stitches. Finally, put a stitch marker on the tail and then use a darning needle to thread the tail of yarn through and behind the top stitches so that your ends are properlysquared away.

THE TOES

Use Judy's Magic Cast-On to create a round 16 stitches - 8 on each needle. So that you don't get lost part way through, make sure you place a stitch marker at the beginning of the first row. You will now be increasing to 20 stitches by adding a stitch at the beginning and end of each row on alternate rounds. Round 2 - Knit 16 stitches Round 3 - K1, M1KW, K6, M1KW, K1, Repeat on bottom row. Round 4 - Knit 20 stitches Round 5 - K1, M1KW, K8, M1KW, K1, Repeat on bottom row. Round 6 - Knit 24 stitches Round 7 - K1, M1KW, K10, M1KW, K1, Page 2 of6 en Bohemian Kn

Round 64 Top P29. Bottom - introduce rib: K2,(P2tog x2, M1KW)x3, P2tog, K2.(14) Round 65 Top P29. Bottom K2, P2, (KFB, P2) x3, k2 (18).

SHORT ROWS AROUND ANKLE HEARTS

On the rows below the stitch count on the top will reduce by one stitch each line until row 74 where 21 purl stitches remain on the top. It's helpful on circular needles to arrange your work so that the block of purl stitches between the hearts are together. Row 66 P2tog, P1, turn your work (28/18) Row 67 S1, K1, (P2,K2) x4, P2.K2tog, K1, turn your work (27/18) Row 68 S1, P1, (K2,P2) x4, K2. P2tog, P1, turn your work (26/18) Row 69 repeat row 67.(25/18), Row 70 repeat row 68.(24/18) Row 71 repeat row 67.(23/18), Row 72 repeat row 68. (22/18) Row 73 repeat row 67.(21/18), Row 74 S1, P1, (K2,P2) x4, K2. (you finish after the last rib and the next round starts now).

BACK IN THE ROUND:

Round 75 Top P2tog, P19 Bottom (K2, P2) x4, K2. (18) Round 76 Top P20. Bottom (K2, P2)x4, K2. (18) Round 77 (this row will feel tight, but bear with it) Top P2, (M1KW, P2togx2)x4, M1kW, P2. (17) Bottom (K2, P2)x4, K2. (18) Round 78 Top P2, (KFB, P2)x5 (22), Bottom (K2, P2)x4, K2. (18) Round 79 (P2,K2)x20. Rounds 80 - 100 repeat round 79. You may now continue upwards as far as you like. Final round: My suggested cast off stitch is to follow the rib, but pick up a stitch and immediately cast off a stitch in between the knit and purl stitches. This is neat and allows for some give around the cuff of the sock - PU 1 stitch, p1, slip PU over, p1, slip stitch over, Pu1 SSO, K1, SKO, K1, SKO, PU1, SSO etc. I'm still looking for an ideal cast off for socks, so please let me know if you have any ideas. Now show me your finished object on Ravelry! Any comments or suggestions? nic@500yearvision.com.Many thanks. Page 6 of 6 en Bohemian Knilling Patlern licola Robinsonova 2014
