· The chart is read from the top down. · Start knitting the chart in Row 9 of the hood (this is a PURL row). · Carry both colours across the width of the chart, but drop the red at the end of the motif on each · When switching between red and white at the edges of the motif, be sure to wrap the new yarn around the dropped yarn so you don't have holes. · When carrying both colours across the motif, carry the red yarn underneath the white yarn so tht letters stand out properly. · The first red stitch is marked with a ★ in the chart. This is the 17th stitch of Row 9. · Read the purl (wrong side) rows from right to left and the knit (right side) rows from left to right.

· Before the motif begins, Row 2 of the pocket must be replaced with the following: · p1k1; p4; pfb (increase by purling into the front and then into the back of the stitch); p5; k1p1 (you will now have 15 stitches on the needle; this modification is required as the maple leaf must be worked over an odd number of stitches). · Begin knitting the chart, from the top down, on Row 3 of the pocket. · In one of the rows near the middle, the kfb increase may interfere with the colour change. Replace the kfb with a “make 1" increase to maintain the integrity of the motif. · After completing the motif, in Row 20 of the pocket, do a p2tog in the middle of the row (the stitch count on the bottom row of the pocket must be 22 so it can be joined to the sweater).
