Materials:

Naturally Loyal Aran/10-ply, 100% wool 1 set of 4 DPNs size 4.5 mm Circular needle (40 cm) size 4.5 mm Circular needle (80 cm) size 4.0 mm Stitch markers, stitch holder, tapestry needle Gauge: 20 sts per 10 cm in St st using size 4.5 mm needles Size: Woman's S-M (approx. 52-56 cm head circumference. Adjust gauge to achieve your preferred size) Abbreviations: CO - cast on; BO - bind off; m1 -increase 1 stitch; K2tog - knit two sts together; SSK - slip, slip, knit the 2 slipped sts together through back loop; sts: stitches; rnd: round; m - marker; pm: place marker Notes: The earflaps are knitted first, and incorporated into the hat. Aside from the earflaps, the hat is knitted entirely in the round, using standard fair-isle or stranded techniques for two-colour knitting. Black is the dominant colour in the pattern, so the black strand should always be underneath the grey (according to the “dominant goes down’ rule) to emphasise the raised 'wallpaper'texture.

Edging:

With right side facing, 4.0 mm long circular needle and A, pick up and knit 39 sts around left earflap, pick up and knit 31 sts along the front of the hat, pick up and knit 39 sts around right earflap, pick up and knit 31 sts along the back of the hat = 140 sts (this is an approximation, a few sts either way is probably fine). Join in the round. BO all sts purlwise. Weave in all ends. You are now ready to face the annoying members of the press congregating outside the scene of the crime. Why is it always the hat photo?
