1. Introductions Hello, this is IM4MAN. I seem to have a liking for Trickster characters, be that DC's Trickster James Jesse, or Supernatural's Trickster (who was a bit more than he seemed). And I'm a fan of the Cirque du Soleil. And those two combined into: KOOZA, an awesome show which has a Trickster character, all clad in stripes, bright, charming, sophisticated and completely awesome. While I do have plans for more Kooza-esque articles, the first I did was the Stocking Cap, reminiscent of the one the character Innocent wore. Really, it's a simple stocking cap with stripes in four color, but to me it has a special meaning and hopefully for you, too (since you are reading this, after all).
2. Requirements
: yarn: type ,Sport" according to http://www.craftyarncouncil.com/weight.ht one skein of dark blue one skein of light blue one skein of orange one skein of white Iam4MAN Designs: Kooza-esque Stocking Cap As always, I'm using Schachenmayr nomotta bravo (30 rows and 22 stitches per 10 cm).
You need: needles
one circular knitting needle size 3,5 mm one set of dpns size 3,5 mm one sewing needle or whatever you use to weave in ends one crochet hook or whatever you use to make tassels → due to the decreasing size you will have to switch to the dpns eventually; if you want to, you can forget about the circular needle, I just prefer to use them
You need: techniques
knitting in the round 2x2 ribbing decreasing by knitting two stitches together making a tassel making an i-cord 3. Instructions I divided the stocking cap into four phases: head, over-head, tail and cord+tassel.
Head:
Cast on 96 stitches in dark blue. Join in the round. Knit in 2x2 ribbing for 15 rows. Switch to light blue Knit 10 rows. Switch to orange. Knit 4 rows. ! Decrease row: /kl1 k2tog/ repeat until there are not enough stitches left, knit those. You will now have 89 stitches left. Knit 5 rows. Switch towhite. Knit 9 rows. !Decrease row: /k10 k2tog/ repeat until there are not enough stitches left, knit those. You will now have 82 stitches left. Switch to dark blue Knit 10 rows. Iam4MAN Designs: Kooza-esque Stocking Cap Switch to light blue. Knit 4rows. !Decrease row: /k9 k2tog/ repeat until there are not enough stitches left, knit those. You will now have 75 stitches left. Your head part is now finished. Over-head: Knit 5 rows, still in light blue. Switch to orange. Knit 10 rows. Switch to white. Knit 3 rows. Knit 37, place marker, knit til the end of the row Your over-head piece is now finished Tail: K 35 k2tog, you have now reached the marker, slipt it, k36 k2tog, you have now reached the end of the row. Knit 5 rows. Basically, the remaining pattern for the tail is always the same: Knit 4 rows. In the next row, knit until the last two stitches before the marker, knit those 2 together, slip the marker, knit until the last two stitches before the end, knit those 2 together. Knit 5 rows. Change color. Repeat. The only thing you have to decide now is how long you want your tail to be. I originally planned to have 415 rows in total, making the cap about 138 cm long, but then decided it was too long for me. If you want your cap to be that long, just continue in the decreasing pattern as described above until you have 3 stitches left. Then k2tog k1 and continue reading at Cord+Tassel If you want your cap to be like mine in size, knit until you have 21 stitches left. That should be the end of one stripe. Now change color and proceed as following: Row 1: k5 k2tog k5 k2tog k5 k2tog Row 2: knit all stitches Row 3: k4 k2tog k4 k2tog k4 k2tog Row 4: knit all stitches Row 5: k3 k2tog k3 k2tog k3 k2tog Row 6: knitt al stitches Row 7: k2 k2tog k2 k2tog k2 k2tog Iam4MAN Designs: Kooza-esque Stocking Cap Row 8: knit all stitches Row 9: k1 k2tog k1 k2tog k1 k2tog Row 10: knit all stitches Row 11: k2tog k2tog k2tog Row 12: k2tog k1 Continue reading at Cord+Tassel If you want your cap to be any other size, either decrease more often than just once per stripe or should you want an even longer cap, decrease less. But I'm afraid you'll have to do the math for that yourself, just remember that ten rows equal roughly 3,3 cm and that you start your tail with 75 stitches and decrease by 2 stitches every stripe if you use the normal pattern.
Cord + Tassel
By now, you should have two stitches left. Make in i-cord in any length you desire. Add a tassel. I did mine purely in white, but you can use all four color if you like. And now, you're finished and have an awesome stocking cap. Normally this is the part where you should weav in all ends, but really - I just wove those inside the head and the over-head piece, I tied those in the tail off and knotted them together. Weave those in if you want, but I think it's unecessary.
