about this project
A simple unisex scarf inspired by Windy's simple red scarf — knit in cotton for the spring. It is sized for children: 3.5 x 40 inches (9 × 101 cm). It has a textured stripe at each end. For a longer or wider scarf, you will need another skein of yarn.
modifications
Very new knitters may wish to omit stripes.
directions
1. Cast on 14 stitches. 2. Knit for about 16 rows or 2 inches (5 cm). 3. (optional) Purl one row. 5. (optional) Purl one row. The second purl row must be on the same side as the first - see where the first stripe is showing up and purl on the reverse side. 6. Return to knit stitch and continue for about 34 inches (86 cm) 7. (optional) Repeat steps 3-5.
\*
Very new knitters often knit tightly. If your scarf is coming out too narrow, just use larger needles: US9, 10 or 11 — whatever you need to make the scarf the desired width. This is how you achieve guage. 8. Repeat step 2. 9. Bind off. 10. (optional) Wet-blocking is really not necessary for this project, but if your scarf is looking uneven, it will help: wet scarf in water (optionally with a little Eucalan or fabric softener mixed in). Very, very gently squeeze out water, place flat between 2 darkcoloured towels and press to remove excess water. Lay flat on a dry towel and gently shape.Letdry.
