Twisted Ribster Hat

Size: 9" high x approx 19" around slightly stretched, easily adjustable for any size in units of 2 stitches. Yarn: MC: 110 yards bulky yarn, approx 110yds/105 grams, 3-3.5 stitch/inch ball band gauge, using yarn held double \* \* see note at end of pattern. Stripes: Approx 10 gram nuggets of 9-10 colors of bulky, aran or worsted weight yarns (approx 7 yards/doubled stripes and 15 yards/quadrupled yarns). Bulky yarns are held double, Aran and worsteds hold four strands at once. (Pompom yarn amounts not included, yarn pompom will require additional yarn.) Yarns used in sample were: The Plucky Knitter Snug (MC) and stripes of Snug, The Plucky Knitter Traveler Aran, The Plucky Knitter Primo Aran, The Plucky Knitter Bello Worsted eedle: 16" US 13 (9mm) circular needle or size needed to g( Gauge: 2.5 stitches and 3 rows/1"(2.5cm), slightly stretched. Stitch Pattern: 1x1 twisted rib. Round 1: (knit one stitch through the back loop (ktbl), purl 1), repeat (ktbl, p1) around. Following rounds: repeat round one. Hat Directions: With MC holding two strands together (yarn doubled) cast on 48 stitches. Join, taking care not to twist during join. Place marker for beginning of round. Work MC in twisted rib for approx 2"/6 rounds after cast on round, cut MC. Work one row stripes with contrast colors, using two or four strands of yarn as in Yarn section above, cutting each at end of round unless the color will be used again in stripe section. If repeating colors, carry those colors up loosely to use again in stripe section. After approx 3" of stripe section is completed (5" from cast on edge), join MC and work to 9"/12 more MC rounds, or until approx 5 yards of yarn remain to work decreases and hat is desired length. Decrease: Knit two stitches together through the back loops (k2togtbl). Repeat k2togtbl around. Repeat this decrease round one more time, 12 stitches remain. Cut yarn and thread through remaining live stitches, cinching top of hat. Fasten end securely. Weave in ends. Or knot and clip inside ends to same length for fringe -- hat can be worn inside out with fringe showing if desired. (Thanks, Jane and Elizabeth for that suggestion!) Add yarn or faux fur/fur pompom as desired. Pompom yarn amounts not included in yarn amounts above. Notes: \* \* Every bit of 110 yards of MC was used in this hat. If longer hat is desired for slouch, or if gauge is different, more MC may be required. If less MC is on hand, stripe section can of course be bigger to compensate. Hat shown is approx 19" slightly stretched but very stretchy and very comfortably fits a 22" head. Size can be increased or decreased in units of 2 stitches, keeping 2 row repeat around intact. These adjustments will naturally change yarn requirements. Lots of “Approximates" in this little recipe -- it's a stash buster so amounts will vary with stash yarns used.
