Knitting for Comfort: A Shared Heart Pattern for Oslo, Utoya, and Beyond - A Symbol of Love and Hope

Pattern illustration

Designed by Kaja Marie Lereng Kvernbakken Photo Kaja Marie Lereng Kvernbakken Friday my world came to a halt. Friends of mine and friends and colleagues of my friends were hunted down, were slaughtered. My little country,my little peaceful Oslo was shamed with a terrorist attack that won't be forgotten. As a writer I found my words escaping me. I wanted to write words to console, to bring hope, to share the love I believe my friends, Norway and the whole world need now. I couldn't find a way. So I resorted to one secure place of soft and warm fuzzyness I know so well: I resorted to my yarn and knitting needles. What I came up with was this stuffed heart. A soft and loving heart. My hope is that you will use this pattern, tweak it as you wish, and make hearts, loads of them: To remember what happened in Oslo and on Utoya or anywhere else where a little bit of love is needed. Pin it close to your heart, give to a friend or a stranger, let it out in the wild,as my graffiti knitting friend Deadly Knitshade would do, so that the heart can find whoever needs it. Knit it in any colour, with or without words, knit them and share them.

This pattern is shared under the Creative Commons License Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported (CC BY-NC-SA 3.O).This means that this pattern and any heart or new pattern made with this pattern as an origin has to be given away for free (on the same terms as I do now),with a little statement telling where you got the original pattern from in the first place (that would be from me and my website). If you now are thinking these hearts are a great idea and you want to make your own pattern using mine as a basis and then sell it: You can't. If you think you'll make bunches of hearts and sell those: You can't. You can only give them away. But (and here's the big but): If you want to use this pattern or any heart or new pattern produced from this pattern to sell and raise money for a good cause (giving away all the money you earn from the sales) then I won't come hunting you down. Also, if you are giving away hearts for free,I don't expect you to put my name or web address on them. This isn't about me. This is about sharing the love.

Small end note:

If you run a yarn shop and put together a little yarn kit to go with this pattern,I hope you will consider giving part of the proceedings to a good cause. I know running a yarn shop isn't a way to get rich fast, but if it won't ruin you financially: Please consider it.

Share the love some more:

Have you taken pictures of your heart(s)? Put them up on the flickr group: Knit your heart out. Have you made new patterns? Please email them or the links to me and I'll share the love. My email-address is: dear@kajamarie.no Materials Yarn of the same gauge in 4 different colours. (If you use thin yarn you'll only need a little of each colour). Double pointed knitting needles that go with the yarn. Needle to assemble the pieces and make the embroideries.

Gauge

You can use yarn of any gauge, but for this particular heart I've used a yarn with 24 sts and 32 rows to 10 cm by 10 cm/4" by 4"' over St st using 4/3.5 mm needles. How to: Knit your heart out The heart is made from two pieces. Knit both pieces and make the embroideries you want on each piece before assembling. On this heart I've used duplicate stitches Cast on 3 stitches. Then knit your heart according to chart number 1. Bind off. Lay the two pieces on top of eachother with the right sides facing eachother. Sew a seam around the edge, leaving enough room to reverse it. Stuff the heart and finish theedge.
