Grace O'Malley The Pirate Queen by Jill Bickers

Grace O'Malley the Pirate Queen of Connacht (c. 1530-1603) inspired this sock design. She was one tough woman--one who chose her life and became the stuff of legends. I hope you enjoy knitting this sock to honor this amazing woman. Materials: About 400 yards of fingering weight sock yarn in a tonal, semisolid, or solid yarn. It was designed for Artisan Sock or Entice by Hazel Knits, but has been knit in several other yarns. Gauge: about 8 stitches per inch on a #1.5 or #2. Use the needle that will give you the right gauge. Needles: You can use whatever method you prefer for knitting socksdoublepoints, Magic Loop, two circulars, or a small (9") circular. Notions: Cable Needle, markers, and a tapestry needle. A magnet board, chart keeper, or some other method for tracking rows will be very helpful.
Directions:
This sock has been written for three sizes -—-Small, Medium, and Large. Each size has been both charts and written instructions. Make sure you follow the right ones for your size or it won't line up right! To make it easier for you, I have color coded the charts. Size Small Charts are outlined in Orange, Medium Charts in Blue, and Large Charts in Green. The charts are all at the end of the pattern, beginning on page 9. You may want to only print those pages you need for your size. Cast on 62 (66, 72) stitches using a flexible cast on. Place a marker, and join your work to knit in the round. Be sure not to twist your stitches as you join yourwork. Size S: Begin with Round 1 of Grace O'Malley Rib Front Panel Small, place a marker, and knit across Round 1 of Grace O'Malley Rib Back Panel. Referring either to the charts or the written directions, work Rounds 1-15 of ONCE and then work Rounds 1 and 2 a SECOND time (17 rounds total). Size M: Begin with Round 1 of Grace O'Malley Rib Front Panel Medium, place a marker and knit across Round 1 of Grace O'Malley Rib Back Panel. Referring either to the charts or the written directions, work Rounds 1-15 of ONCE and then work Rounds 1 and 2 a SECOND time (17 rounds total). Grace O'Malley the Pirate Queen Size L: Begin with Round 1 of Grace O'Malley Rib Size Large, place a marker and repeat Round 1 of the chart again. Referring either to the charts or the written directions, work Rounds 1-15 of ONCE and then work Rounds 1 and 2 a SECOND time (17 rounds total). Fun Fact About Grace O'Malley #1: Born into an important seafaring family, Grace wanted to follow in her father's footsteps. As a young girl, she wanted to accompany him on one of his trading expeditions, but he refused. Her long hair, he told her, would be caught in the ropes. Refusing to accept this excuse, she promptly cut her hair. She did, in fact, follow her father's path and became a business woman, pirate, and warrior. The English bitterly complained about her, claiming she was at the heart of all the rebellions in the region.

Round 1: Work Transition Pattern Row 1 (pg. 11) for your size, slip the marker and work Round 3 of the Grace O'Malley Rib. Round 2: Work Transition Pattern Round 2, slip the marker and work Round 4 of the Grace O'Malley Rib.
IMPORTANT!!!!
Begin the Grace O'Malley Leg Panel for your size. You will work the panel only for the front of your leg. The back panel will be continued in the Grace O'Malley Rib, starting with Round 5. If you wish to continue to use the chart for the back ribbing as you knit the sock, do not work Rounds 16 and 17 of the Rib Panel for the remainder of the leg. When you reach the end of Round 15, restart the panel at Round 1. If you choose to stop referring to the back panel chart, that's fine too. Just remember, when you cross the cables at the beginning and end of the Leg Panel, you also need to cross them in the Rib section as well. Work Rounds 1-30 of the Leg Panel once, and then work Rounds 1-25 of it a second time. Work to the end of the round.
Fun Fact About Grace O'Malley #2
In addition to being a busy entrepreneur and Pirate Queen, Grace O'Malley was a mother to five children. In fact, legend states that she gave birth to a son while at sea. The next day, her ship fell under attack and Grace arose from childbed to help beat back the attackers. Now that's a Tough Woman!!

Heel and Foot
Having worked the cuff and leg, you are now ready to start your heel. You should have finished Round 25 of the second repeat, including the back rib.
Heel Flap
Your heel will be worked over the last 30 (32, 36) stitches of the round—in other words, over the back ribbed section. Turn your work around so that the wrong side is facing you. Row 1 (WS): S1, purl to the end of the row. Row 2 (RS): \*S1, K1. Repeat from the \* to the end of the row. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until you have worked a total of 30 (32, 36) rows (that includes your first two rows). End having worked a right side row.
Heel Turn
Row 1: Purl 17 (18, 20), p2tog, p1 turn Row 2: All Sizes-S1,k5, ssk, k1 turn. Row 3: S1, purl to one stitch before the gap, p2tog, p1 turn. Row 4: S1, knit to one stitch before the gap, ssk, k1 turn. Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until all stitches have been worked 18 (18, 20) stitches remain. (Note: the following instructions assume you are using doublepoints. Adjust the instructions for the method of your choice if you are using another method for knitting your socks). With an empty needle (Needle #1) pick up 16 (17, 19) stitches along the side of the heel flap. With another needle (Needle #2), work across the instep stitches, following round 26 of the Grace O'Malley Cable panel. With another empty needle (Needle #3), pick up 16 (17, 19) stitches heel stitches onto your needle. Slip the remaining heel stitches onto Needle #1. Grace O'Malley the Pirate Queen You should have 25 (26, 30) stitches on Needle #1, 32 (34, 36) stitches on Needle #2, and 25 (26, 30) stitches 0n Needle #3. Begin working your gusset decreases. Round 1: knit to the last three stitches of Needle #1, k2tog, p1. On Needle #2, follow the next round of your chart. On Needle #3, p1 ssk, knit to the end of the round. Round 2: knit to the last stitch of Needle #1, p1. On Needle #2, follow the next round of your chart. On Needle #3, p1 knit to the end of the round. You will continue your gusset decreases, until you have 15 (16, 18) stitches on Needle #1,32 (34, 36) stitches on Needle #2, and 15 (16, 18) stitches on Needle #3. On the instep, you will finish the panel, and then switch to the chart pattern of your choice (see note below). IMPORTANT NOTE: Grace O'Malley was a woman who demanded the right to choose her own path. You get to choose your path on the foot! There are three options for knitting the foot in pattern. After you finish the leg chart. you have three options on how to finish your sock. It makes for a lot of pages in the clue, but you only need a few. I suggest printing only the pages you need! Option 1. Continue the leg chart all the way down the foot. Even after you finish your Gusset decreases, keep the last stitch on Needle #1 and the first stitch on Needle #3 as purl stitches. This will allow the side cables to really pop. Continue the chart until it is time to start the toe. You will know when you have reached it when you try it on and the sock reaches the base of your big toe. Option 2. Work the Grace Knit Tapered Cable in the appropriate size for you. After you have worked Row 26 of the Knit Tapered Chart change your last stitch on Needle #1 and your first stitch on Needle #3 to knit stitches instead of purl stitches. After you finish the chart, continue to work the instep in knit until it time to knit the toe. You will know when you have reached it when you try it on and the sock reaches the base of your big toe. Option 3. Work the Grace Purl Tapered Cable Chart in the appropriate size for you. Even after you finish your Gusset decreases, keep the last stitch on Needle #1 and the first stitch on Needle #3 as purl stitches. This will allow the side cables to really pop. After you finish the Purl Taper Chart, continue to work the instep in purl until it is time to knit the toe. You will know when you have reached it when you try it on and the sock reaches the base of your big toe.

Grace O'Malley Meets Elizabeth I
Fun Fact About Grace O'Malley #3:
In 1593, the English imprisoned Grace's son on a charge of treason. In an act of great courage and desperation, Grace sailed her ship to England to petition Queen Elizabeth I for his release. The two powerful women met in a face to face interview, and appear to have viewed one another with mutual respect. Elizabeth recommended the release of Grace's son and that a pension be granted to Grace, on her assurances of being a faithful subject. Grace's enemy, the English Governor of Connacht, was not pleased.

The Toe
I've presented two versions here. Option I is a standard knit toe, which you could use with any of the leg options. Or, if you did the Purl Tapered foot, you might prefer to do Option I--a knit/purl combination that mirrors the rest of the sock. The choice is yours!
Option I: The Knit Toe
Your sock has 62 (66, 72) stitches. Before you start knitting, make sure your stitches are distributed properly. The instructions are written assuming doublepoints--those of you using a different method will need to adapt them as appropriate. Needle #1 has 15 (16, 18) stitches. Needle #2 has 32 (34, 36) stitches. Needle #3 has 15 (16, 18) stitches. Size Small and Medium only: knit to the end of Needle #1. On Needle #2, k1, ssk, k to the last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1. Knit to the end of Needle #3. You now have 30 (32) stitches on Needle #2. Knit one round plain. All Sizes: Decrease Round: knit to three stitches before the end of Needle #1, k2tog, k1. On Needle #2, k1, ssk, k to the last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1. On Needle #3, k1, ssk, k to the end. Plain Round: knit all stitches on Needles 1, 2, and 3. Repeat these two rounds until 24 (24, 24) stitches total remain, OR until toe is the desired length. Knit to the end of Needle #1. Kitchener together. Grace O'Malley the Pirate Queen 9-

Knit to the end of Needle #3. You now have 30 (32) stitches on Needle #2. On Needle #1, k to the end. On Needle #2, p to the end. On Needle #3, k to the end. All Sizes: Decrease Round: knit to three stitches before the end of Needle #1, k2tog, k1. On Needle #2,p1, ssp, p to the last 3 stitches, p2tog, p1. On Needle #3, k1, ssk, k to the end. Repeat these two rounds until 24 (24, 24) stitches total remain, OR until toe is the desired length. Knit to the end of Needle #1. Kitchener your stitches together. If you want, you can use the regular kitchener stitch. However, if you would like to maintain the stockinette sole and purl instep, that is certainly possible as well.
