Two Blue Ruins By Raven Sherbo

These gloves were inspired by the pair that Kate Winslet wears at the beginning of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I've wanted to make myself a pair for years and years, and now I finally have, and I love them!!!
Materials:
MC - Approx. 175 yds of worsted weight (this is the light blue - I used Cascade 220 Superwash color 884) CC - Approx. 70 yds of worsted weight (this is the dark blue - I used Cascade 220 Superwash color885) One set of Size US 6 DPNs Gauge (in the round in stockinette stitch): 20 sts x 28 rounds = 4"
Note:
This pattern is worked with travelling jogless stripes. For more information on this technique, visit: http://techknitting.blogspot.com/2007/01/jogless-stripes.html. As you work these gloves, you will be slipping the first stitch of the round on certain rows. This means that the beginning of the round will move. Because you will be carrying the alternate color along the wrong side of the work, every time you switch colors be sure to knit the first stitch with the new color loosely or the fabric will pull along the “seam."
Note about the thumbhole:
Since the pattern uses a buttonhole thumb opening, it doesn't really matter where the thumb opening goes with respect to the beginning of the round, but I have written the instructions to have the buttonhole opening at the end of the third needle, regardless of where the beginning of the round is at that point. Feel free to work the thumb opening somewhere else in the round if yousochoose.

Pattern:
CO 40 sts in CC. Divide between 3 DPNS and join to work in the round, being careful not to twist. Knit 5 rounds in CC and join MC (do not cut the CC -- leave it attached).
Set up rounds:
Round 1: Knit 1 round in MC. Pattern round 2: Slip the next stitch. PM for beginning of round. Knit 1 round in MC. Pattern round 3: Knit 1 round in MC. Pattern round 4: Knit 1 round in CC. Remove marker.
Main pattern rounds:
Pattern round 1: Slip the next stitch. PM for beginning of round. Knit 1 round in MC. Pattern round 2: Remove marker. Slip the next stitch. PM for beginning of round. Knit 1 round in MC. Pattern round 3: Knit 1 round in MC. Pattern round 4: Knit 1 round in CC. Remove marker. Repeat these 4 Main Pattern Rounds 4 more times.
Thumb opening:
Round 1: Slip the next stitch. PM for beginning of round. Knit 1 round in MC. Round 2: Remove marker. Slip the next stitch. PM for beginning of round. Knit 1 round in MC. Round 3: Knit 1 round in MC. Round 4: With CC knit to 8 sts before the end of the second needle. BO 8 sts. Continue knitting with CC to end of round. Remove marker. Round 5: Slip the next stitch. PM for beginning of round. With MC knit until you reach the 8 bound off sts. Using a Backward Loop cast-on, CO 8 sts. Continue knitting with MC to end of round. Round 6: Remove marker. Slip the next stitch. PM for beginning of round. Knit 1 round in MC. Round 7: Knit 1 round in MC. Round 8: Knit 1 round in CC. Remove marker. Repeat Main pattern rounds 1 -- 4 27 more times. Including the live stitches you just worked, you should have a total of 34 stripes in the CC (not counting the first 5 set up rounds). Work 2 more rounds in CC and BO loosely.
Finishing:
Turn glove inside out. Fold the CO edge down so it is even with the CC stripe that has your buttonhole thumb opening. Use your preferred sewing method to tack down the CO edge. Be sure to only sew the CO edge to the TOP of the thumb opening (i.e. your 8 bound off sts). Fold the BO edge down at the last single CC stripe. Use your preferred sewing method to tack down the BO edge. Weave in ends. Follow these exact same instructions for the second glove. When you are done, put them on, pour yourself a cup of Irish coffee (or just put Bombay Sapphire gin in a coffee mug if you really want to do Clementine justice) and snuggle up with a goodbook!
