Masonry
This hat is knitted in the round. The pattern is created by using slipped stitches. Only one color is worked ata time. Sizing: Adult. It is fairly stretchy so it could fit a range of head sizes.
Materials:
Lion Brand Wool Ease in Black (color A) and White (color B) US size 8 DPN Tapestry needle Stitch markers 17 stitches and 35 rows equals 4" in pattern stitch.

Construction:
CO 84 stitches, using a stretchy cast on, with color A. (1 have used the regular long tail cast on and the German twisted cast on. Both worked great.) PM and join in the round. Set Up: K1P1 around until piece is about 1".
Pattern Stitch:
Row1: With color B, \*K5, sl 1\* around. Row 2: \*P5, sl 1\* around. Row 3: Repeat row 2. Row 4: With color A, knit around. Row 5: Purl around. Row 6: With color B K2, sl 1,\*K5, sl 1\* until the last 3 stitches. K3. Row 7: P2, sl 1, \*P5, sl 1\* until the last 3 stitches. K3. Row 8: Repeat row 7 Row 9: With color A, knit around. Row 10: Purl around Repeat rows 1-10 until piece measures about 6 inches from the cast-on edge ending with either row 5 or 10. Clip color B

Setup row : \*K12 pm\* 6 times. Knit to end. Next row: \*Knit to 2 stitches before marker, K2tog\* around. Repeat last row until there are 14 stitches remaining. Next row: K2tog around removing the markers as you go. (7 stitches) Clip yarn leaving about an 8 inch tail. Draw trail through the last 7 stitches and pull tight to close hat. Weave in ends.
