Yarn: MC (Dark purple #8886) Cascade 220: 100 g / 220 yds (1 skein) CC (Hot Pink #26) Karabella Aurora Bulky extrafine merino: 50 g / 56 yds (2 skeins) Cheshire Cat Colors (Alice in Wonderland) Needles: Knitted in the round on size 7 & 8 circular 32” needles (or double-point needles) Gauge: Swatch in ribbing & wrap around leg just below knee to check size: Use larger needles if too small/ use smaller needles if too large Anatomy: Slouchiness comes from tucks in the fabric. This is achieved by knitting cables here and there so the fabric puffs and bunches in between cables. In this legging, stripes in main color (MC) have the cables, and stripes in the contrasting color (CC) puff out because they are in plain stocking stitch. Use a slightly thicker or less pliable yarn for the CC plain stripes than for the MC cabling. The cuffs at the knee and ankle fit closely because they both have tighter cables, but the ankle cuff then flares out for about 2" to cover the top of the boot/shoe, while the top cuff is ribbed so it hugs the leg. Each legging has a "spine" up the back composed of tighter cables to help it stay up. Weaving a string tie through the top cuff helps, too. Common Knowledge Tips: 1. Choose the lighter color for cabled stripes so the pattern will be more visible. Unless you have a lot more of one color. If so, use that color for the cabled stripes because cables gobble up yarn quickly. 2. Jogless stripes. At start of second row in each new stripe, pick up stitch immediately below, from first row, and knit together with stitch on needle. 3. Divide stitches between needles so that the split never occurs as p2 vs. k2, or p4 vs. k4, where the stitches need to be tight for a cable. Ideal split is k2 vs. p2, or k4 vs. p4. 4. Whenever the yarn looks too loose between p2 vs. k2 (or p4 vs. k4), knit the first purl through the back loop. This will not change the appearance of the fabric, so you can do it whenever needed. How? Insert needle as if to knit, slip st to right needle, then back onto left needle. Purl.

Instructions: (top down)
Cast on 56 sts in main color (MC) using size 7 needles. 1st MC stripe: Knit 8 rows in k2, p2 ribbing on size 7 needles. Convert adjacent k2's into 7 crossover cables: Row 1: Beginning with first k2 past cast-on edge, move p2 to outside of each pair of k2's so the p2's are aligned Row 2: C4B across each k4 , Row 3: Knit sts as they appear (as if on WS using straight needles) Row 4: Move p2's to outside of each k2. [note: Knitting in the round allows you to turn a cable on any row, so these cables are tighter than if you had turned a cable every other row, as is commonly done on straight needles.} Continue in k2, p2 ribbing for 7 more rows. st CC stripe: Change to size 8 needles and CC and knit in stocking stitch for 9 rows. 2nd MC stripe: Knit in k4, p4 for 5 rows, then C4B on every other (alternate) 4-st knit panels. Space so that cables are on each side of p4 at center back. (Reverse direction of one of these back cables so they cross toward one another.) Knit in stocking st 3 more rows, then repeat 1st MC Stripe crossover cable at center back only. Knit in stocking st for 5 more rows, then C4B only on those k panels that have not yet been cabled. Knit 5 more rows in stocking stitch. 2nd CC stripe: Repeat 1st CC stripe. e, except turn 4-st cables only on panels adjacent to center back: k5, C4B, k5, C4B, ↓ 3rd CC stripe: Repeat 1st CC stripe. 4hMCstrie: Rpeat 2d MCstripe Continue bycreating5moreC4B's, sothat anovalis formed at centerback, and stitches between crossovers are split to form "fountains." Knit four rows in k4, p4 ribbing, purl 3 rows, and bind-off loosely. Repeat for second legwarmer, substituting C4F for every C4B. Tie: Using CC and size G crochet hook, chain stitch two 40"shoe strings. Weave one string through top (cast-on edge) of each legging so that the two ends emerge on the outside of the leg. Knot each end. Tie cords in bows.
