Big Slouchy Hert
Measuring your head Determine circumference you want by measuring the distance from center forehead, left ear, base of the head, right ear, and back to center forehead. The center forehead and the base of the head should be where you want the edge of the hat to hit. The height of the hat should be determined based on the length between the center forehead and the base of the head through the top of the head. Let us call this A. The edge of the hat is knitted with 1-by-1 rib and it is quite stretchy. It works best when the hat circumference along the cast on edge is 1 to 2 inches smaller than the head circumference when measured slightly stretched. The height of the hat should be more than half the length A for a slouchy look. Al three versions on this pattern have the height determined by the following formula: hat height $=$ (head measurement $\mathrm{A}+4$ ) / 2. The four inches added are for ease, and more inches can be added for a slouchier hat.
Check the fit as you knit
Check often. Around row 10, check for the hat circumference. Around row 30, check if your hat has enough ease for the look you want. Skip some rows without decreases for less volume, and add rows without decreases for more volume.
