Wakefield Hat Knitting Pattern: A Timeless Unisex Design with Detailed Instructions and Two Finishing Options

Unisex and timeless in design, the Wakefield hat is a simple knit with an intriguing traveling rib stitch pattern. Warm and cozy, with a bit of a slouchy style, this hat is knitted in the round. It is a written pattern with abbreviations. The pattern can easily adapted to be even more slouchy by adding another repeat (or two) of the stitch pattern. Two finishing options available, and you can choose from S/M/L. The small size would be great for a teenager. This project is suitable for the beginner knitter. Measurements of finished hat: Width: 20"/ 22"/ 23” in circumference. Height: 9.50"/ 9.75\*/ 9.75"

Yarn:

Softness, a worsted weight yarn in a soft blend of merino and an antibacterial Dralon by Www.yarnz2GO.com, one skein in the color Steel, or 150 yards of a soft worsted weight yarn. Alternatively you can use a kid seta yarn and a sport weight smooth yarn held together. If you add more ridges to make a more slouch hat, you will need more yarn.

Notions:

US size 5 (3.75mm) circular needle 16" (40.5 mm) in length, or double pointed needles if you prefer. Darning needle.

Gauge:

20 sts and 28 rows = 4 inches, knitted in Stockinette stitch.

Abbreviations:

CO = cast on K = knit M = marker Rep = repeat P = purl Pl m = place marker WS = wrong side/ purl side RS = right side/ knit side k2tog = knit 2 stitches together

Getting started

Cast on 94/ 110/ 120 sts, pl m and join in the round being careful not to twist stitches. Round 1: [K1, p1], rep to m. Repeat round 1eight more times, for a total of 9 rounds.. Round 10: Knit round. Round 11: [P1, k1], rep to m. Repeat round 11 eight more times, for a total of 9 rounds. Round 20: Knit round.

Straight version:

Repeat rounds 1 through 20 two more times for a total of 3 times. Repeat rounds 1 through 10.

Finishing straight version

Bind off loosely, leaving a tail of about 1 and a half yards. Fold hat WS out and sew the top edge together with a diagonal line on either side as seen in the photos On the next page. Flip hat back to RS.

Decreased Crown Version:

A great way to practice your decreasing... Work rounds 1 to 20 two more times for a total of 3 times, ending with a row 19. Row 20: Knit 47/ 55/ 60, pl m, knit to end of round. Round 1: K2tog, k1, [p1, k1] rep to marker, sm, k2tog, k1 [p1, k1] to end of row. Round 2: K2tog, [p1, k1] rep to marker, sm, K2tog, [p1, k1] to end of row. Repeat rounds 1 and 2 eight more times, for a total of 9 rounds - 76/ 92/ 102 sts. Knit 1 round.

Finishing for decreased crown version

Bind off loosely, leaving a tail of about 1 and a half yards. Fold hat wrong side out and seam the top edges together. Flip hat back to RS. OR Another option is to do a 3 needle bind off. NOTE: If choosing this option end with row 19 of stitch pattern before binding off. Weave in all ends. Blocking is optional. The Wakefield hat looks best more organic and unblocked.
