Gauge
16 stitches= 4" [10 cm] in pattern stitch, after blocking. Row gauge depends on how piece is blocked. To save time, take time to check gauge. Gauge is not crucial to the success of the project, but the amount of yarn needed will differ if gauge differs greatly.
Pattern Nates
Alaria is knit lengthwise, with dropped yarn overs forming columns recalling kelp forests. The pattern is a repeat of 5 stitches, and length can be changed by adding or subtracting stitches in multiples of 5. The width can be changed by adding rows, but additional yardage will be needed.
Pattern Instructions
Cast on 200 stitches with Blues using the long tail method. Knit 2 rows. Set up row: K5, \*yo 2x, k2tog, k3\*. Repeat from \* to \* until the end of the row. Set up row is not charted. Pattern row: K5, \*yo 2x, k2tog, k3, dropping 2"d yo from needle when making the stitch\*. Repeat from \* to \* until the end of the row. Continue pattern row, changing colors every 2 rows (1 garter ridge), until desired width. Complete 2 rows of garter stitch, then bind off using lace bind off method. Charted directions: Complete the set up row, then repeat Chart A, changing colors every 2 rows, until desired width. Complete 2 rows of garter stitch, then bind off using lace bind off method. Lace Bind Off: \*k1, return stitch to LH needle, k2tog\*. Repeat \* to \* until all stitches are bound off. Block if desired. Special Abbreviations k: knit k2tog: knit 2 stitches together yo: yarn over k1 elongated: knit the stitch, dropping the accompanying yarn over from the needle without working it
