Ryggesocks
Design: Bitta Mikkelborg

This pattern came to me while visiting a friend at Rygge, hence the name. I had 3 skeins of Viking Alpaca Sport in wonderful variegated colors, and started to try out these rows of slipped stitches. I loved it when I saw it actually was working. If you like more stitches for cast on, just add stitches in areas where there are only knitted stitches. Remember to add the stitches in cuff too, and beware that number of heel stitches will be different. Specifications for Viking Alpaca Sport, found at Ravelry: Weight: DK / 8 ply (11 wpi) Yardage: 109 yards (100 meters) Unit weight: 50 grams (1.76 ounces) Gauge: 23.0 sts = 4 inches Needle size: US 4 - 3.5 mm Fibers: 40% Merino, 30% Nylon, 30% Alpaca The content of fibers makes the yarn very soft, yet strong. I used needles 3 mm for the cuff and 3.5 mm for the rest of the sock. Abbreviations and symbols: knit Vslip stitch purlwise, with yarn in back k: knit p: purl tbl: through back loop ktbl: knit 1 through back loop k2tog: knit 2 together p2tog: purl 2 stitches together sl: slip ssk: slip, slip, knit: slip stitch 1 knitwise, then slip stitch 2 knitwise, then knit the two stitches together through back loop.

Cuff:
With smaller needles; cast on 50 stitches and divide on 4 DPN's, or use Magic Loop if you prefer. Join for knitting in the round, be careful not to twist. \*k3, p2, repeat from \* through round. Knit 12 rounds like this (or you may knit longer cuff if you like).

'ith larger needles; knit following chart. The chart is to be knitted twice pr. round. Knit chart from right to left for your right sock. For your left sock; knit chart from left to right. Round 1 - 2 is to be repeated all the way through the leg, and continue on the upper side of the foot. Knit the leg as long as you like, ending with round 2. Chart

Working on 25 first stitches only, increase to 26 stitches on first row. Leave remaining instep stitches on hold. Row 1 (RS): \*SI 1 knitwise, k1\* repeat from \* across row. Row 2 (ws): Sl 1 purlwise, purl across row. Repeat these two rows until you have worked 27 rows, ending with row 1. (Or you can knit until desired length of the heel.)
Heel turn:
Row 1 (ws): sl 1 purlwise, p14, p2tog, p1,turn. Row 2 (RS): sl 1 knitwise, k 5, k2tog tbl, k1, turn. Row 3 (Ws): sl 1 purlwise, p to 1 stitch before gap, p2tog, p1, turn. Row 4 (RS): sl 1 knitwise, k to 1 stitch before gap, k2tog tbl, k1, turn. Repeat rows 3 and 4 until all heel stitches are worked.
Gusset and foot:
You now have 16 stitches on the needle. Divide these stitches on 2 needles (needle 1 and 4). The rounds now begins under the foot with needle 1. The thread is now at the end of needle 1. With your free needle, pick up 16 stitches along the heel flap on the right side. Knit these 16 picked up stitches tbl with needle 1. Knit the insteps needles (needle 2 and 3) following the established pattern from the leg. With the free end of needle 4, pick up 16 stitches along the left heel flap like you did on the right side. Knit these 16 picked up stitches tbl, and the last 8 stitches normally. Round 1: Knit to last 3 stitches on needle 1, k2tog, k1. Knit across instep stitches on needle 2 and 3, following chart. On needle 4, k1, ssk, knit to end of round. Round 2: Knit in established pattern, without decreases. Repeat these two rounds until you have 13 stitches on each of needles 1 and 4. Continue knitting in established pattern without decreases until your sock has reached the desired length. Normally the sock is long enough when they are 2 inches less than your foot length.
Toe:
Knit 1 decreasing round like this: Knit to last 3 stitches on needle 1, k2tog, k1. On needle 2, k1, ssk, knit to end following established pattern. On needle 3, knit to last 3 stitches following established pattern, k2tog, k1. On needle 4, k1, ssk, knit to end. Knit 3 rounds without decreasing, following established pattern. Knit 1 decreasing round. Knit 2 rounds without decreasing, following established pattern. Knit 1 decreasing round. Knit 1 round without decreasing, following established pattern. Knit every following round as round 1, until you have 17 stitches left totally. K2tog through round, at the end there will be 3 stitches left. Knit these 3 stitches together. Cut the yarn leaving a tail long enough to pull through the last 8 stitches, and to weave in the end.

A big "thank you" to Rigmor who, in an excellent way, has testknitted these socks?
