Tetris Inspired Stockinette Stitch Scarf Pattern with Intarsia Knitting Guide

Chart - Tetris scarf

A chart, and basic instructions, for a stockinette stitch scarf made up of interlocking Tetris shapes. If this is your first time knitting intarsia (multi-colored knitting, with only one color active at a time), you may want to look through an intarsia tutorial, such as those here and here, before beginning. Yarn: Seven colors of the yarn of your choice. There are seven Tetris shapes; you will assign one color to each shape. (So, for example, every time shape D appears in the chart, you wil knit i in color D.) I used Jo Sharp Classic DK Wool, in the colors Beetle (A), Nasturtium (B), China (C), Pine (D), Aubergine (E), Teal (F), and Scarlet (G), and used less than one skein (50 grams) of each.

Gauge: Each block in the chart should correspond to a 1"x1" (2.5 cm x 2.5 cm) square of fabric in stockinette stitch. In DK Wool on a size 5 (US) needle, I got 7 sts and 8 rows to a 1" square. Pattern: For a gauge of X sts x Y rows = 1" x 1": Cast on 3X sts in color C, then 2X sts in color G (For example, geting ${7}\,\mathtt{s t s}=1\,^{\prime\prime}$ , I cast on 21 sts of C, then 14 sts of G.) Knit Y rows in st st, remembering to wrap yarn on wS whenever you switch colors. For row $\Upsilon_{+1}$ , switch to the colors of Chart row 2. Continue in this manner, moving on to the next row of the chart after every Y knitted rows, until you reach the end of the chart. (Note: you will sometimes have to cut and reattach the same color between chart rows, e.g. color $\mathsf{F}$ between rows 17 and 18.) Bind off. Ends: Weave in allends. I strongly recommend doing this as you go along - there are a LOT. Blocking: This is a long thin rectangle of stockinete stitch; it will probably require heavy blocking to stop it from curling. Use your yarn's instructions and your best judgement. (Other possibilities: adding a garter stitch border, knitting in something other than st st.)
