If you prefer this hat to be smaller or larger, you can use a different size needle and/or yarn or increase/decrease your stitch count. The yarn I used is Cascade 220 Superwash wool yarn in Smoke, Strawberry Cream, Aran. (Worsted weight, 100% soft wool yarn that you can wash and dry. I love knitting with this yarn!) I've tried to go into quite a bit of detail (probably too much for most of you) in hopes of making this pattern as easy to understand and follow as possible. And of course, please feel free to contact me should you have any questions regarding the pattern. I hope you have fun knitting this cozy, thick, super warm hat!

Cast On
With size 1 (2.25 mm) needles and MC (Grey), cast on 96 stitches using the Old Norwegian/Elastic Long Tail caston or other stretchy cast-on, being careful not to twist the stitches when joining. (To make the job of joining in the round easier, I like to cast-on one extra stitch at the end of my last cast-on stitch and then when I am ready to join and knit the first round, I slip that last stitch onto the first needle (before the first stitch I cast-on), place my marker, and then knit the two together when I start the 1st round. -This keeps the stitches where I join nice andsnug.) Begin Ribbing Rounds 1-2: With size 1 (2.25 mm) needles and MC K3 P3 to end of row (2 rounds) Rounds3-6: Begin corrugated ribbing and work all K3 stitches with Grey, alternating with pink for all P3 stitches. (4 rounds) Change Needles Round 7: With size 2 (2.75 mm) needles and MC, K to end of row (1 round)
Begin Chart
Work chart, and attach CCs (Contrast Colors) as necessary while following chart. Leave at least a 6 inch tail for each color to weave in later when finishing up your work. -Note: Whenever a color/yarn is used for more than 3 - 5 stitches continuously in a row, I like to carry the unused color/yarn loosely in the back (by catching the unused yarn with the yarn you are working with and continuing to knit with the yarn in use.) This will prevent long strands of yarn (floats) from getting caught on fingers and ears. @ For the larger motif (Norwegian Star), I usually add stitch markers between every repeat (this pattern is a 16 stitch repeat) so that it is easier to follow where I am and to make sure that when I make a mistake in the chart I can catch it before I get all the way to the end of the round. Speaking of the end of the round... I like to catch or twist my yarns at this point to ensure that I don't have a gap between the end and start of the row.) Round 32 of Chart At this point, I began my decreases. If you prefer, you can begin the decreases after you complete the Norwegian Star motif or after you finish the chart. If you begin the decreases before you complete the chart, knit all decrease stitches in the background color.

Begin Decrease Rounds K2tog, knit to within last 2 stitches before marker, knit 2tog TBL (through back loop), move marker. (7 rounds) Note: When I am working on the decrease rounds, I always put stitch markers at the beginning of the round and after every stitch repeat (16 stitches in this pattern). I also like to use another color of stitch marker at the beginning of the round in case I get distracted and/or lose count or forget where I am.... :-) If you are knitting with circular needles, you will need to change over to DPNs as needed for the final decrease rounds.
Cut/Break Yarn
At this point, you should have 12 stitches left. Break yarn, leaving enough tail to pull through final stitches, weave in ends (approximately 8 inches), and pull tightly to close. If you prefer, you can also finish with the Kitchener Stitch/grafting. Weave in ends to finish.
