Gallimaufry
Designed by Jan Eaton, this lovely rectangular wrap is knitted in two identical pieces joined at the centre. There are no spacer sections or transition rows; each of the ten lace patterns flows naturally into the next one. The design is fully charted and there are no row-by-row instructions. Gallimaufry can be knitted in fingering weight/sock or laceweight yarn. The same charts are used for both versions but the number of stitches and chart repeats are different.

Fingering weight/sock yarn wrap (left) knitted in two 100g/400m skeins of hand dyed 4ply merino, colourway Tiger's Eye, 0n 4.5mm needles. Side edges are blocked straight using blocking wires, top and bottom edges are pinned into points; relaxed size after blocking 230cm x 50cm. Laceweight wrap (below) knitted in two 57g/576m balls of Jaggerspun Zephyr Wool-Silk 2/18, colourway Plum, on 3.5mm needles. All edges are pinned into points; relaxed size after blocking 220cm x 50cm including points.

Finishing Gallimaufry
Place live stitches back on the needles arranging the stitches so that the right sides of the knitted halves are held together and both needle points are at the same side of the work. Using a third needle of the same size, alternately slip one stitch from first needle and one stitch from second needle on to third needle; repeat this across the row so all stitches are now transferred to the third needle. Join the two halves as follows, slipping all stitches purlwise: Sl 1, \*sl 1, lift the first slipped stitch Over the second slipped stitch and off the needle. One stitch has been cast off. Repeat from \* until all the stitches have been cast off and one loop is on the needle. Pull the yarn tail through the loop and slip it off the needle. Darn in yarn ends and block. Charts show both RS (odd numbered) and WS (even numbered) rows. Read RS rows from right to left; WS rows from left to right.
