Wild Talents Designs IDo Not Drink ... Wine! by Mona Terwedow

I think those charms that you put on the stem of a wineglass so you can tell yours from someone else's are really neat. Of course, I don't use them. I never drink . . wine! I generally drink pop. The problem of being able to tell drinks apart stilL exists, thouqh. Imaqine, you bave six women over for a night of knitcing, and they all drink the same diet cola. Or, in the excitement at your Superbowl party, no one can tell whose beer is whose! Whatever shall you do? Knit up a bunch of can cozies in different colors and parrerns, that's what! These cozies do exura duty, too. The fabric is flexible enough to use them to clean off the tops of cans before opening them, and absorbent enouqh that you don't really need a coaster. Then, after they've cleaned off the tops of enouqh cans and absorbed enouqh condensarion, you just toss them in the wash with your towels, and they're ready to go again. And if you really want to use the wineglass charms, just add the oprional hanging loop, and you've got someplace to put one!

Patcern Notes
Instructions between asterisks (e.g. \*k1, p1\*) are to be repeated to the end of the round. One skein of Sugar 'N Cream will make three to four cozies. The cozy will likely stretch a little with use. After washing, it will shrink back to its proper size. It may even be a little smaller, but it will stretch again!

Instructions On US5/3.75mm needles, co 10 sts (long tail co is fine). Join, being careful not to twist the stitches, pm. r1: \*k1, p1\*. r2: \*kfb\*. (20 sts) r3: \*k1, p1\*. r4: \*kfb\* (40 sts) r5: \*k1, p1\*. Continue in 1X1 rib until piece measures 1"/2.5cm. Next round (turning round): p to end. Switch to larger needles, and work in desired rib pattern until piece measures 4.5"/11.5cm. Bind off. Optional: before breaking yarn, with crochet hook, chain 12 stitches and join to body to make loop for hanging. Weave in ends. Rib Parern Suggestions You can use just about any rib pattern —- or any other kind of pattern —- so long as you can fit it to 40 stitches, or close to it. If a pattern needs one more or fewer stitches (e.g., a multiple of three stitches), increase or decrease as necessary in the "turning round." Keep in mind that patterns in stitch dictionaries are generally written as if you will be knitting flat, and often have selvedge stitches. To convert these to circular knitting, you'll probably need to drop any extra stitches (e.g., instead of "multiple of five stitches plus two," you'd only work the "multiple of five stitches"). Also, the pattern can only be about 30 rounds long. Long patterns will need to be modified to fit. 1x1 Rib (Spring Meadows cozy) Every round: \* k1, p1\*. Repeat to desired length. Holey Rib (Light Blue cozy) r1 - 2: \* k1, p1\*. r3: \*k1, yo, k2tog, p1\*. r4: \* k1, p1\*. Repeat rounds 1-4 to desired length. Zig Zag Rib (modified from Nikki Epstein's Knitting on the Edge) (Ecru cozy) r1, 3, 5: \*k1, p2tog, p1, m1, k1\*. r2 and all even rounds: k every stitch. r7, 9, 11: \*k1, m1, p2tog, p1, k1\*. Repeat rounds 1-12 to desired length. Puff Rib (adapted from Barbara G. Walker's A Treasury of Knitting Patterns) (Hot Blue cozy) On turning round, p last two stitches together. r1: \*p1, yo, k1, yo, p1\*. r2-3: \*p1, k3, p1\*. r4: \*p1, k3tog, p1\*. Repeat rounds 1-4 to desired length. LaceRib(adaptedfromBarbara G.Walker's A Treasury of Knitting Patterns) (Cream cozy) r1, 3: \*k3, p2\*. r2: \*k1, yo, ssk, p2\*. r4: \*k2tog, yo, k1, p2\*. Repeat rounds 1-4 to desired length. Twisted Rib (Fuchsia cozy) Every round: \*ktbl, p1\*. Repeat to desired length.
