Fortune Cookies Sock Pattern by Tina Smith: A Cozy Fitting Design with Elasticity

Fortune Cookies

I had the good fortune to take a sock design class from Cookie A in January 2010. For the class, she had a stack of pattern books from which we could choose our knit pattern, if we didn't have one already in mind. As I was flipping through the pages, this pattern jumped out at me, I had to design a sock with this pattern. We (Cookie and I) fiddled with the stitch count and row count until it fit the cast on number I needed. These socks knit up quickly as the pattern is easy to memorize and keep track of as you knit along. I have incorporated the ribbing into the first round repeat, as I find it keeps the continuity between the ribbing and leg pattern. This pattern leads to a cozy fitting sock that has lots of elasticity. I named these Fortune Cookies because the pattern looks like little fortune cookies when knit up (at least to me) and it's also a nod to herself, Cookie A.

Materials:

Yarn: Knitosophy Dream in Color - Superhero 450 yards Needles: Size 2/2.75mm or size to get gauge. Circulars used for Magic Loop Gauge: 9 sts/12 rows to the inch. To insure proper fit, make sure to check gauge. 4 stitch markers (optional)

FYI:

\*To help you recall when to use ssk & k2tog, remember that SSK has an l' in it (slip, slip, knit) and leans to the left. K2tog has an 'r' in it (knit 2 together) and leans to the right. \*This pattern presumes that you know how to knit, purl, increase and decrease. There are many resources to explain how to Kitchener graft the toe. I would suggest Googling 'Kitchener' for help.

Cuff:

CO 66 sts.

(I prefer the cable cast on as I think it's a stretchier cast on, however, you can use which ever cast on you would like.)

Leg:

Follow setup chart for first repeat. After completing Setup chart (chart 1), do 1 repeat of Leg chart (chart 2). Complete 1 full repeat, and then do row 1 onemoretime.

Heel:

1 few stitches around to do the heel flap. There are 34 instep stitches and 32 sole stitches Move stitches 1 and 2 from Needle 1 to the end of Needle 2. Move stitch 1 from Needle 2 to the end of Needle 1. Needle 2 will now hold the stitches for the instep. Begin heel flap stitches. Row 1: \*Slip 1, k1\* Row 2: Slip 1, p1 across Repeat these 2 rows until heel flap measures 2-2.5 inches, ending on a purl row.

Turning the Heel:

Row 1: Sl1, k17, k2tog, k1 (11 sts rem) Row 2: Sl1, p5, p2tog, p1 (11 sts rem) Row 3: Sl1, k to 1st st before gap, k2tog (st before gap and st after), k1 turn Row 4: Sl1, p to 1st st before gap, p2tog, p1, turn\* Repeat rows 3& 4 until all stitches are used up, ending on purl row. 18 sts rem.

Picking up for the Gusset:

Row 1: N1: K across heel stitches, pick up and k 18 stitches along side of heel flap; N2: start row 1 of instep chart (chart 3); N1: pick up and k 18 stitches along heel flap. (Marker not needed as you can tell where row changes after Row 1, however the rows technically change mid heel. As a cheater tip, the gusset dec row is the same as the even numbered rows inthechart) \*Row 2: N1: K to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1; N2: follow chart; N1: k1, SSK, k to end of the row. Row 3: N1: K all sts; N2: follow chart; N1: knit all sts\* Repeat Rows 2 & 3 dec the gusset sts until you have 32 sts remaining on N1. There will be 34 sts on the instep (N2) for a total st count of 66.

Instep & Toe:

Complete 2.5 repeats of chart 3. You may need to knit a few rows of stockinette before you start decreasing for the toe or if you have a larger foot, may be able complete 3 repeats.

Toe Decrease:

To even out the stitch count for the top and bottom, as you have 34 instep & 32 sole stitches, you will need to do 1 round of toe decreases on the instep only (N2 holds the instep stitches). Row 1 N2: k1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, kl; N1: k all sts \*Row 2 N2 & 1: K all sts Row 3 N2: k1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, kl; N1 k1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1\* Repeat Rows 2 & 3 until you have 10 sts left.
