Set-up For Shawl (Figure 1)

With “body" color, cast-on 3 stitches. Knit 6 rows. This produces 3 garter stitch ridges on each side of work. Next row: Knit 3, turn work 90 degrees clock-wise, pick up three stitches along garter stitch edge (one in each of the 3 garter stitch ridges), turn work 90 degrees clock-wise again, then pick up 3 stitches along cast-on edge (9 stitches total). At this point the body of the shawl is set up. You have three garter edge stitches at the beginning and end of each row. The markers demarcate the center section, or “wedge", and the stitches between the three edge stitches and the markers are the side “wedges". NOTE: The side wedge sections have increases on every row, but the center wedge only has increases every other row. After all WS rows you should have the same number of stitches in the central wedge as you do in each of the side wedges.

"Body” of Shawl

Repeat the following two rows until you are happy with the size of the shawl or you run out of the body color. RS: k3, yo, k to marker, slm (slip marker), yo, k to next marker, yo, slm, k to last 3 stitches, yo,k3 WS: k3, yo, k to last 3 stitches, yo, k3

"Mane" of shawl

Switching to your chosen “mane” color, work four rows even in garter stitch (k all stitches on both RS and WS). Then work one row as follow: Next row: k3, (yo, k2tog)\* repeat across until last 2 stitches, then k to end Work one more row even in garter stitch (k all stitches). Bind off using stretchy bind-off on following row, and weave in ends. Using “mane" color, wrap yarn around a hardcover book or something in order to get enough strands to add fringe. You will need two strands per hole created by the lace row. The strands you cut out should be twice the length you want the fringe to be (mine were about 6" long, so about 12" strands were cut). Using crochet hook, fold two strands in half and add to each lacy hole. Trim final strands as desired to make them even. Block and enjoy! About this shawl: As most people know, horses have always been a tremendous passion of mine. Several years ago, I was very fortunate to have met a horse trainer who has made a tremendous difference to my horse and 1. She is an amazing horse person and wonderful soul. In addition to training horses, she runs a horse rescue through which she has done some incredible work. The shawls I made from this design were donated to a silent auction fundraising dinner to benefit her rescue, Hope4Horses. If you are interested in the good work that this organization does and/or if you want to make a donation to a very worthy cause, please check out her site here: http://hope4horses.com/ You can find several ways to donate/help by clicking on the “Sponsoring horses in need" tab.
