Sylvan Baby Sweater Pattern with Variations for Newborns, Including Short and Long Sleeves, and Decorative Eyelet Row with Vandyke Lace Variation

Sylvan baby sweater

This quick-knit no-seam sweater was inspired by the “woodsy” name my friend chose for her little one and the request of another friend for baby sweaters whose cuffs didn't fill with drool when the baby chews on her hands. Accordingly, there are two sleeve variations here—-a traditional long sleeve and a shorter,

slightly tighter version that should avoid the majority of drool while still being warm enough for a jaunt into the air-conditioning. The shorter sleeves are pictured; the longer sleeves have the design the same distance from the end of the sleeve, the upper part of the sleeve is just elongated. Closure can be accomplished by weaving a ribbon into the eyelet row or by sewing a button on and using the first eyelet in the row as a button hole. (Or leave it without a closure—I'm not really sure why newborn sweaters need them.) The names of the increases come from www.knittinghelp.com . Other increases could be used to achieve different effects (although changing the yarn overs would radically alter the look of the sweater). Gauge 4.75 sts and 7 rows=1” (in pattern) to fit \~9 lb newborn Gauge is not too critical (as long as you aren't over 5.5 sts per inch it will still fit most newborns) Around 4 sts per inch gives a nice size 0-3 month

Chart for lace; even rows knit BO—-Suspended bind off is recommended because it is a bit stretchy but not too stretchy... Suspended bind off is worked as follows K2, \*pass first stitch on right needle over but leave on left needle, knit into second stitch on left needle (was first stitch before the pass over), drop two stitches from left needle\* Make your choice of sleeves and PU 2 stitches from underarm area (or CO2), slide sleeve stitches back onto needle, PU2 from underarm (or CO2). Join in round and place marker for beginning of round (30 live stitches) (These could probably be knit flat and seamed by picking up one more stitch at beginning and end, purling a row then knitting to the pattern, making wrong side rows purl.)
