Simple 2x2 rib stitch worked in the round
Instructions
Cast on 64 stitches and divide them evenly among your needle(s). Knit one row. Join and begin knitting in the round in simple twisted rib. Work simple twisted rib stitch for 16 rounds or the desired length from cast on. Begin working twisted double rib stitch. Work rounds 1-8 8 times, or to desired leg length. Divide for heel. Work the heel on the first 32 stitches only. If you are using dpns you may want to put these all on one needle; if you are using one or two circular needles, you probably already have this half isolated. Slipping the first stitch of every row, work the heel back and forth in rows continuing in twisted double rib stitch. Work 32 rows back and forth in this manner (4 times through the twisted double rib stitch pattern). Turn heel. Slip 1, K17 stitches, ssk, K1, turn work. Sl1, P5, P2tog, P1, turn work. Sl1, K6, ssk, K1, turn work. Sl1, P7, P2tog, P1, turn work. Sl1, K8, ssk, K1, turn work. Sl1, P9, P2tog, P1, turn work. Sl1, K10, ssk, K1, turn work. Sl1, P11, P2tog, P1, turn work. Sl1, K12, ssk, K1, turn work. Sl1, P13, p2tog, P1, turn work. Sl1, K14, ssk, K1, turn work. Sl1, P15, p2tog, P1, turn work. Sl1, K16, ssk, turn work (no stitch left to knit 1 at the end of the row). Sl1, P16, p2tog, turn work (no stitch left to purl 1 at the end of the row). 18 stitches are on the needle, with right side facing. Slip 1, K17 across. Pick up 16 stitches along the left side of the heel flap. Work across top of foot section beginning to work in simple 2x2 rib stitch (P1,K2,P1). Pick up 16 stitches across the right side of the heel flap and join these to the heel stitches. Knit 9 stitches from the heel flap and place marker. This point will mark the beginning of the gusset decrease rows for the heel. Work gusset decreases as follows: Round 1: Knit to last 3 stitches of heel section, k2tog, K1. Work top of foot in simple 2x2 rib stitch. K1, ssk, work to marker, slip marker. Round 2: Knit heel section. Work top of foot in simple 2x2 rib stitch. Knit to marker, slip marker. Alternate these 2 rounds until you have 16 stitches in the heel on each side of the marker. Then remove marker, and continue working the bottom of the foot in stockinette and the top of the foot in the simple 2x2 rib stitch. Work the foot in this manner until it is 1.5" shorter than the desired final length, and then begin working toe decreases as follows: Round 1: (K1, ssk, knit to last 3 stitches of that half of the sock, k2tog, K1) repeat once Round 2: Knit Alternate these two rounds until there are 22 stitches in each half, 44 stitches total. Then work only round 1, the decrease round, until there are 8 stitches in each half, 16 stitches total. Cut yarn and work Kitchener stitch to close the toe. Weave in the topend.
