Knitted Journey Cloak Hat Pattern Inspired by thatgamecompany's Video Game

Journey Cloak Hat

Journey is an amazing video game created by thatgamecompanym. Part of the game's visual appeal is the influence of textiles and tapestries, not only in the character's cloak and scarf, but also in the creatures and bridges encountered. The design on the border of the cloak called out to be made into a knitted hat! FINISHED SIZE: Adult L/XL (\~24" finished circumference) YARN: Caron Simply Soft (170g/288m) Autumn Maize (#0008) - 1 skein Autumn Red (#9730)-1 skein NEEDLE: 16" circular, size 4 or size needed to give gauge) GAUGE: 22 stitches = 4 inches over colorwork

(NOTE: Because of the large pattern repeat --32 stitches-—the easiest way to resize this hat is to change yarn thickness and gauge. DK at 24 stitches/4 inches ought to give a slightly smaller hat, and sport at 26 stitches/4 inches should be a little smaller still)

Pattern:

Using the crochet chain provisional method, CO 128 stitches with Maize. (This post on Bella Knitting has an excellent tutorial.) Join, and knit 18 rounds. Purl 1 round (turning round). Rounds 1-18: Follow chart. Round 19: Remove crochet chain to liberate provisional cast on loops. Fold facing to inside along purled turn line. K2tog (1 loop from front + 1 loop from facing) around, using Maize as indicated on chart. Rounds 20 to 65: Follow chart. For the longer floats, I wove in the carried color every 5 or 6 stitches as I went. (Here's one way of doing it.) Decrease for crown: 1. K2, K2tog around (96 sts) 2. Work 1 round even 3. K1, K2tog around (64 sts) 4. Work 1 round even TJ O'Sullivan - June 2013 5. K2 tog around (32 sts) 6. K2 tog around (16 sts) 7. K2 tog around (8 sts) Fasten off and weave in the ends. Presto! I left the crown of the hat plain, but you can certainly personalize it by adding a pompom or tassel, or whatever decoration your heart desires! (Note -the chart has been adapted from tumblr user zygomaticprocess' bead bracelet chart. The original can be found here.)
