A generous and satisfyingly sized cowl that combines the coziness of knitting with the warm density of hand quilting. The cowl is constructed by knitting a rectangle of 2x2 ribbing, holding together a strand of standard worsted weight yarn with a strand of lace weight yarn to create a custom marled look. The knitting is then sewn into a loop with a fabric panel of shashiko-inspired hand stitching. CONSTRUCTION
Block work, stretching ribbing slightly. Mine blocked to 13" wide by 43" long. If yours is different, make note of the measurements. Determine the size of the fabric panel. The finished circumference of the cowl is to be 60", so to find the length of the fabric panel subtract the length of your knitting from 60. Add 1” for the overlap at either end and 3/4" for the seam allowance. For my 43" long knitted piece, my fabric was 18 3/4" long. To figure the width, measure the width of your knitting and add 3/4". Cut 2 pieces of fabric to the dimensions you've come up with. Cut 2 pieces of batting to the same dimensions. Place the fabric right sides together with the 2 layers of batting on top. Use a 3/8 seam allowance, sew around stack of fabric and batting, leaving a 4" section open for turning. Clip excess batting at corners, and turn right side out, stitch opening closed. Press. Use ruler and marking pencil to make stitching lines of random widths anywhere from 1/4" - 1" apart. Use hand sewing needle and pearl cotton to stitch lines of 1/8" running stitches down the marked lines. Pin one of the short sides of knitting to one of the short sides of quilting. Use hand sewing needle and pearl cotton to stitch knitting to fabric using whip stitches. The stitches really disappear into the knitting. Sew the other side of the knitting to the fabric in the same way. Repeat stitching for other end of knitting and fabric. Done!
