Knitting Pattern for a Colorful Child's Apple Hat with Leaf and Stem

O 6 months (6 12 months, 1 2 years, small child)

Yarn:

Green Apple: Spud & Chloe Sweater (55% superwash wool, 45% organic cotton, superwash: 100 grams/160 yards), 1 skein Grass #7502, small amounts Rootbeer #7503 and Moonlight #7507 Red Apple: Blue Sky Dyed Cotton (100% organic cotton; 100 grams/150 yards), 1 skein in Ladybug #629, small amounts of Pickle #634 and Blue Sky Skinny Cotton in Coffee #310

Gauge:

5 stitches per inch in stockinete stitch

Tools:

US size 7 sixteen inch circular needles or size to obtain gauge US size 7 set of four double pointed needles or size to obtain gauge US size 3 set of two double pointed needles for the leaf and stem Scissors Yarn needle Ruler or tape measure Stitch marker

Abbreviations:

k: knit p: purl k2tog: knit two stitches together st(s): stitch(es) ssk: slip two stitches separately as if to knit, knit the slipped stitches through the back loop kfb: knit in the front and back of the same stitch rnd(s): round(s)

Hat:

With selected hat yarn and the sixteen inch circular needles, cast on 66 (72, 84, 90) stitches. Join to work in the round being careful not to twist the stitches. Place a stitch marker on the first stitch. Rnds 1-4: (kl, pl) repeat to the end of the round. Now knit every round until the hat measures 4 (4 V2, 5, 6) inches from the cast on edge. Divide the stitches evenly on each of 3 double pointed needles. (22 (24, 28, 30) stitches on each needle)

Decrease Rounds:

Rnd 1: (k2tog, k to the last 2 stitches on the needle, ssk) repeat on each needle.

Rnd 2: knit

Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until 10 stitches remain on each needle (30 sts total remain) and ending with a row 1. Next, repeat round 1 until 4 stitches remain on each needle (1 2 sts total remain). Next rnd: (k1, k2tog, kl) repeat on each needle (3 sts per needle, 9 sts total remain) Cut the yarn and place the end on a yarn needle. Pull the end through the remaining stitches and pulltight to close the hole. Stitch to secure and pull the end through tothe inside of the hat. Stem:

With Brown and 2 smaller double pointed needles, cast on 3 stitches. Work in I cord until the stem measures l inch from the cast on row. Bind off. Cut the yarn leaving a 10 inch end. Pull the end from the cast on row through the cord and trim at the bind off row. Place the 10 inch end on a yarn needle and whip stitch the stem to the top of the hat. Next, wind the end tightly around the stem to the top of the stem and then back down to the hat. Pull the end through to the inside, secure and trim.

Leaf:

With the selected leaf color and 2 smaller double pointed needles, cast on 3 stitches. Row 1: kfb, k1, kfb (5 sts) Row 2: purl Row 3: knit Row 4: purl Row 5: knit Row 6: purl Row 7: ssk, k1, k2tog (3 sts remain) Row8:purl Row 9: k1, k2tog, pass lrst stitch over and off the needle (1 st remains) Cut the yarn and pull through the remaining stitch. Place the end on a yarn needle and weave through the purl side of the leaf along the edge to the bottom of the leaf. Whip stitch the cast on edge of the leaf to the top of the hat at the bottom of the stem.
