Cat's Eye Nebula Place mat and Pillow By Sonya Delisle
This design is based on the Cat's Eye Nebula. You can knit a single rectangle from the chart and use it as a place mat, or you can turn this into a nice soft pillow. Both projects start the same way.
Material:

The following colors are suggested: o1 ball Black o1 ball Garnet Heather (Burgundy) 1 ball Conch (Pink) o1 ball Rouge (Red) o1 ball Alfalfa (Green) o1 ball French Lavender (Lilac) (only about 1 meter is used). ·Plastic or cardboard bobbins to hold small quantities of thread while working. ·YarnNeedle Polyester filling if making a pillow.
Gauge:
Gauge is not really important. With the yarn and needles suggested, the final size will be a square around35cmwide.
Place mat instructions
Cast on 100 stitches. Follow the chart. The first and last 10 rows of the chart are knit in garter stitch (knit every row). The central 105 rows are worked with a 10-stitch edge in garter stitch and the other 80 stitches are intarsia done in stockinette stitch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side). The legend for the colors is at the bottom of thechart. Cast off. Darn ends and block.
Pillow instructions
Cast on 100 stitches. Work 10 rows in garter stitch. For the next 95 rows : Odd-numbered rows : knit to end Even-numbered rows : knit 10, purl 80, knit 10 Work 10 rows in garter stitch. Cast off. Block. Seam 3 sides of the 2 rectangles together. Fill with polyester to desired fullness. Seam the last side together.
