rilk Run Shawl

Completely reversible, this everyday shawl elevates jeans and a long sleeve tshirt to casual elegance while grocery shopping with, or without, bodyguards in tow. Wrapped Danish-style, it transforms into a cozy rib warmer for stylishly walking the dog, or drapes beautifully about the shoulders when your castle feels a little chilly. The shawl's garter stitch body instantly creates warmth and texture while the pleated ruffle only looks complicated. Simple to memorize, and taking just 14 rows to complete, the edging is knit on the needles--no picking up stitches. Multiple design options combine with easy knitting to create a relaxing project that the experienced or novice knitter will enjoy. Design noles: -Mark the shawl's rs--it's hard to tell r from w in gs. -For a seamless knit, use spit splice method to join woolskeins.Watercanbeused, butwhere'sthefunin that? Demo here (not of actual spitting, mind you!) -Read pattern thoroughly--there are lots of options. -Blocked dimensions will relax after pins are removed; block harder/softer to achieve the size you're after.

Jinishing Snstuclions
Cast Off by knitting 2 stitches together. Slip the resulting single stitch back onto the left hand needle; knit it together with the next stitch on the needle. Continue in this way until 2 stitches remain. Knit the 2 stitches together, pull yarn through, and weave in ends. Blocking begins with soaking the shawl for 20 minutes in tepid water with a bit of wool soak, baby shampoo, or dish soap. Gently squeeze water from shawl and blot in a large beach towel and/or use your washer's spin cycle to remove remaining excess water. Using the blocking mats, pin out the shawl's long edge to the measurement listed for your version, including the first and last pleat edges. Measure down spine and pull top of center bellto measurement listed, pin in place. Starting at top edge, pull out each bell and pin just above where bell begins. You may need to work your way around shawl more than once to ensure even size. Measure from bottom center to each top edge corner; make any necessary adjustments. Pat pleats into shape with your fingers, or pin, if you so desire. Allow piece to air dry completely before gently removing pins.

Yarn S Ramblinge
\* Due to varying skein weights and knitting styles, I feel it best to suggest more yarn than may be necessary to complete this project. An extra skein is never a bad thing. \*There are too many yarn subs (and too many price points) to even begin to suggest alternatives, but Ravelry has an excellent database with pictures and buying options. \*No, I don't work for Elann or Patons. I already had their yarns in my stash and chose them as each were well suited to my idea of a stylish, everyday shawl.

Not Enough Yarn
Like most knitters, I often see a pattern I want to make with yarn I know I won't have enough of. Here are a few suggestions for stretching your skeins: 1. Knit the shawl in stockinet stitch (k rs, p ws) as this uses less yarn. To prevent the shawl from curling, knit the first 3 and last 3 stitches of each row to create a stable edge. 2. Have to have garter stitch? Knit fewer “body rows," (8-9 rows per inch). Garter stitch is very elastic and will block out considerably; the wing length will be reduced however. 3. Use 2 colors: 1 for the body and a coordinating/contrasting color for the pleated ruffle. 4. The Cinnamon Sirl and Suot a Siule Saded versions each use less yarn.
No Open Work
If the open work, pictured below, created when the shawl's body is being knit, is not your cup of tea, (I prefer Red Rose myself) work the MR3 version of the shawl pattern.

No holes in my pleats, please! (See photo in the middle of page 3) Follow the instructions for the Revered Bola Bell Ruffle 2.
Customizing the Size
-This shawl easily adapts to any size you wish, but please keep in mind the number of stitches on the needles before beginning the pleated ruffle must be divisible by 8 with 7 stitches remaining in order for the pleats to turn out as pictured. -When increasing stitches, it is important to increase the same number on both sides of the center stitch and that the kfb increases are on the right side of work. Hon lo wear your rilk Run Shanl Brush your hair until it shines. Throw this shawl around your shoulders and go shopping. Don't forget to buy milk and smile-you look fabulous! Gnormous and heartfelt thanks to Mary, Judy, and Helen.
