Left hand mitten:

With blue, cast on 56 stitches and join for working in the round. Knit the ribbing with blue and white: k2 with white, p2 with blue. Be careful not to pull the not-working yarn too tight. Knit the ribbing like this for 20 rows, then k2p2 one row using just blue. Start working the chart 1 from right to left. Be careful not to pull the not-working yarns too tight. Start the thumb gusset on row 5: Follow chart up to and including stitch 23, place marker, make one, knit two, make one, place marker and continue to the end of the row. Continue increasing in this way every following 3rd row following chart 2 until you have 16 stitches between the place holders. On the next row make one stitch, slip next 16 stitches onto scrap yarn to be worked on later, make one stitch and continue to the end of the row. Continue knitting according to chart l until you reach the nail of your little finger. Begin decreasing like this: On the beginning of 1st and 3rd needle, knit one, slip one, knit one, pass over the slipped stitch. At the end of 2nd and 4th needle, knit the 3rd and 2nd last stitches together, knit one. When you keep decreasing like this you decrease one vertical stripe on a time. When the stripe has only one stitch left, knit this stitch on the following row using the color of the stripe next to it. When there is 8 stitches left break the yarn and draw through remaining stitches, pull tight.

Thumb:

Knit the thumb with blue. Transfer the stitches from the scrap yarn to needles and make 8 new stitches. Divide stitches evenly on the needles and work in the round until you've reached the nail of your thumb. Decrease knitting together the last 2 stitches of the needle until there are 6 stitches left. Break yarn and draw through remaining stitches, pull tight.

Bind off and blocking:

Weave in all ends and block.

Right hand mitten:

Knit like the first mitten but read the charts from left to right.

Chart 1: for left hand knit from right to left, for right hand knit from left to right
